It's hard to trust the "retail" price. You would insure jewelry for what u paid. Keep all receipts.

@gypsy71----You need to get your jewelery appraised by an appraiser for INSURANCE PURPOSES.   Retail prices, Online prices are totally different.  The Shopping Channels are different.   If you had a 1carat,round Diamond and ask a $ 10,000 price, that would be your choice.  I could have the same Diamond and ask for $50.00, my choice. Most  appliances, and cars start with an MSRP out of factory, everyone decides how much they want to sell it for.   Jewelery and clothing are just haphazard pricing.   So, if you want to insure your jewelery ask a jeweler for INSURANCE appraisal.  HTH---------tedEbear

Don't you insure by what the replacement value is?  You will never get back the price you paid for jewelry unless it's in a very high category most of us do not, or cannot purchase from.  Or, at least this is MY understanding.  I also understand that a "retail" price is generally inflated and no one pays it.  Just a sales technique.

Years ago, a family member stole $1,000 worth of my gold jewelry. She had a key to my house and came over when I wasn't home. Fortunately, I had receipts and the insurance company paid me $1,000. At that time, I had $1,000 maximum on my jewelry, which didn't cost me extra. Don't know what it is now. For jewelry worth more than the maximum, you would need to buy extra insurance. Also, take pics of all ur jewelry.

I now have a customized closet with a built-in dresser (California Closets). My jewelry is in the top 2 drawers of this dresser and have locks. Better than leaving jewelry within reach. I also NEVER leave money or jewelry out when I have workers, ie, carpet cleaners, window washers, plumbers, repair people, going into my bedroom.

It is good to have a jeweler you trust that you can take a piece of jewelry to. They can( most of the time)..... can look at a piece of jewelry and give you a general opinion.

My mother got an Emerald ring from a Shopping Channel a few years ago and her jeweler told her it wasn't very good quality and he would send it back......especially when she told him what she paid for it.
