Shipping a box is ridiculously expensive.  I used to ship a box now and then to family.  Now I stuff it in my suitcase and bring it along when I visit.

I still ship now and then, but for Xmas now I send money only! I used to send packages until shipping, not express, escalated to over $20. The UPS guy has been very helpful a couple of times to cut my box down so it could go at a lower rate.

Re: UPS CHARGES ARE SHOCKING

UPS is crazy, my SIL mailed some dishes from PA to AZ that were her mother's .... it was $150.

When I mail a "gift" to friends or family ... I order and have the co. send directly to the recipient.   I do not get to examine it, wrap it, but at least I can usually get "free shipping".  With today's shipping prices, I no longer want to "wrap the gift myself" and mail it.

Re: UPS CHARGES ARE SHOCKING

Didn't the UPS drivers just get a new contract in July? I know their old contract (Teamsters) expired in July. Figured the costs would go up to cover whatever increase they may have received.

Even though expensive, for my money, they are a far superior carrier over any others I have used.

I had bought a pair of shoes online (not QVC) but really didn’t like and decided to return. This company gives you 60 days to return with the usual caveat not worn and return in original packing. I ended up only paying $37 for a$60 pair of shoes with discount. So I went to UPS with the package all ready to return and to my shock sending it UPS ground would cost $19. Post Office wanted $24.50but it would arrive by Sat 9-1-18. I decided to keep the darn shoes as returning cost wasn’t worth it My goodness. I had not sent anything via UPS for so long I was in shock at the cost

Where did you buy the shoes?   Some online retailers will send a prepaid label much like QVC with a $7 or so charge to use it.   That shipping does sound exhorbitant.

I think we all are considering shipping and look for free  exchanges and returns. I also try to find Bill to Ship to so not to Have to send a package. I think I would be shocked!

Always amazes me when posters complain about QVC shipping rates.  Unless you are lucky enough to purchase from a free shipping site, QVC's rates are much lower than the average company.  I am rarely lucky enough to find anything I want on the free shipping sites.  And, you rarely get something for nothing, so that free shipping is costing you somehow.

People tend to get so caught up in that free shipping hype, they stop paying attention to the total cost of an item.  I really put a lot of thought in what I order and I rarely return anything unless it's defective.

Re: UPS CHARGES ARE SHOCKING

I agree that the charges for personal shipping (if you aren't able to get a corporate discount) are shocking. I usually use priority mail since that is a flat rate charge.  I ordered 2 items from Amazon 2 weeks ago. The first time they were shipped, they were shipped USPS and were never delivered to me. One of my co-workers went to the post office and they gave one of the packages to her! This is after I called and had the items tracked and the consumer affairs person at the post office couldn't "find it" either.  One package has never yet shown up.  I re-ordered the item and told Amazon I was paying for prime so ship it UPS!  I finally got one item yesterday via UPS  but the 2nd item is still in transit via the postal service. I'm supposed to get it by Tuesday.

I'm more than a little annoyed about it. High prices & low service. I used to be able to depend on Amazon's prime for 2 day delivery but not so much any more. Even UPS lets me down.

To arrive by the 1st means it would have to arrive by Friday 9/30 since most online retailers don't staff to accept packages on weekends.

UPS doesn't deliver on weekends unless you want to pay extra.

I work in postal and a pair of shoes usually weighs too much to go 1st class but could have gone by priority mail for a lot less than $24.50. Use the non-flat rate shoe shaped priority box.  Use flat rate if the shoes are unusually weighty.   Unless your shoes were outrageously heavy, they could have gone for $10-$12 max.

How did you package your shoes?  The size of the box also determines cost.  I never return shoes in the outer box.  I have some cheap 19x24 and 14x18 envelope type envelopes.  They don't weigh much and the cost to ship is a lot less.

Really?  Yikes.  I'm surprised they take them back.  I get really angry when I buy a pair of shoes online and receive them in a generic white box.  That must be a return from someone who does what you do.  I am one who keeps most of my shoes in the original boxes.  The name on the box, the little photo on the side along with the description help me identify which box to grab.

Yes, both of you are so right, I used to exchange gifts with my Brother & SIL but the cost of shipping out of state became ridiculous....Now we exchange gift cards and put them in our Christmas cards..........MUCH CHEAPER!!!
