Shipping label vs send it yourself?

I think it is hard to tell if you send an item back and don't use the prepaid label, whether they deduct it anyway from your return. Sometimes a jewelry item can be mailed by USPS for a few dollars, but using the prepaid label it is 6.95. Do you think they pay attention to how it was returned. I am worried if I don't use the label they subtract it anyway. Has anyone been able to check this?
