I got to thinkin, The only time celebrity merchandise ever swayed me is when I was a teen and a young adult. Omg, I had to have bow clips like,Sandra Dee, once I couldn't think until I bought a Cookie Coat, that Cookie, from American Bandstand wore. They were the rage. It was an above the knee white or black cloth coat, long sleeves with acuff and 8 huge 2 inch buttons in front with 2 pockets. By the time I talked my mom into getting one I had to,settle for the Pennys version , not the Macys or Emporriums version. Scarred me for life. No kidding. I wore it, but it was never the "real" Cookie Coat . Lol

The disdain for Oprah is ridiculous. It strikes me as political.
I look at her lists. I look at many lists of the best gifts, best books, etc.

Can't stand her. I have NEVER or will NEVER buy anything on her list or products endorsed by ANY celebrity.

@tansy I totally agree where most of it comes from. Same for most everything, here .political. iMO, She is wonderful woman who has helped millions and has done well for herself. She did it herself at the beginning. I do agree. People have moved out of the reflective, inner peace things , many things that were relevant then , have changed. As well as the age group that watches daytime tv, or talk shows. People, especially women go more for the mud slinging, tell it like it is , live out loud life style tv talk shows,.or the designer pumps fights of reality shoes. Lol. So Oprah isn't as relevant in certain ways now. But in some ways she is. I think she works a lot back behind the scenes. Either way, she can put her list out, and it's only worth what others want to glean from it. It isn't doctrine

I agree. I used to care about her favorite things and buy a couple of them every year. Never again.

Just like other hyper-famous, celebrated, prominent or super wealthy individuals in society, I think Oprah elicits lots of different opinions of those who've been exposed to her for decades-- almost everyone has an opinion.
I don't mind her compiling lists of her favorite things. They may be helpful to some. I've never paid much attention to her, and avoided her shows, with their conventional, pop-psychology thrust.
I noticed when she started recommending books, and found that the type of books she gets enthusiastic about, are not interesting to me.
If anything, when she was influential, her emphasis on New Age-type philosophy was not a positive force in society, in my opinion.
I guess she's one of those many celebs who seems cordial enough, and even "fun" on a personal level, but whose ideas I find to be anathema. But that's nothing new.

I don't, and never have, paid attention to the list. I saw a few episodes of her show back in the day.
The summer after his junior year of college, my late brother interned at the ABC affiliate in Baltimore. At the time Oprah gave a few news clips and co-hosted a local morning show with Richard (don't know his last name). She was young and single.
She seemed very insecure, always looking for something that would make her life better. Someone at the station had a Mary Kay party and she bought a lot! I heard some stories! Rumor was she had a huge crush on Baltimore Oriole Eddie Murray. I have no idea whether or not they did date.
Anyway, my brother had to interview someone as part of his time there. He asked one of the anchors, the popular weatherman, and the sports director. Most were nice to him when he saw them, but they all turned him down. Oprah kind of looked out for him, and she didn't turn him down. That was the interview. Sadly, he died a few years later and never got to see her move to Chicago and start her famous talk show, star in The Color Purple, and change her life. I have the tape, but have never seen it. We tried to get it converted from the special format it's in, but had no luck.
I think she is a great actress, but I never did get the hero worship. I just wasn't interested. And the list doesn't interest me.
If I ever get a chance to talk to her I will tell her how appreciative my brother was, and how he went on after he graduated to work at a TV station for a short time. He really liked his coworkers, and almost all of them helped us during a very difficult time.
