My "Decoration Day" memory

[ Edited ]

I was really young,not even in grade school. Daddy was a WW2 vet and a fireman so he had to work. His mother my Grandmother played at the cemetery, "My Buddy". I remember the men putting her piano on a wooden plank. I also remember Mom dressing me and her self in white.

Many years later I remember going to the Memorial Day parade w/my boys. They waved and saluted to their Grampa who marched in the parade.

A few years later we went to a parade where the sons of one of my boys, as Boy Scouts, carried the colors.

Excuse me I am getting a little mellow.

Re: My "Decoration Day" memory

My main memory of Decoration Day is that people would get all dressed up in their Sunday finest and bring flowers to the river and toss them in. While it was originally designated for those lost in the Civil War, I've heard that our African American community honored all their ancestors who were lost at sea. These days, we have flags placed on the entryway of our National Cemetery and a small ceremony. My family would "celebrate" the day by cleaning the cemeteries where our ancestors were buried, military-related or not.

Re: My "Decoration Day" memory

We lived fairly closely to the main cemetary in my home town.  My mom made our dresses, so my sister and I were dressed in our new white dresses.  Along with my dad, we visited the local cemetary and walked among the head stones, paying our respects periodicaly.  From there, we went to my dad's home town and visited the cemetary where his parents were buried.

Re: My "Decoration Day" memory

My dad used to take us to the Parade on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx. About 10 years ago I had the honor of marching in a small parade in Yonkers with my GS troop. There was a very moving flag ceremony after the parade.

Stop being afraid of what could go wrong and start being positive what could go right.

When I went through the cemetery up to Arlington House, it was the most sorrowful sight.  The vista just went on and on.  We owe such much to those there.  Still runs in my mind 🇺🇸

@Group 5 minus 1

That's indeed a beautiful memory you shared with us.  Thank you.❤️

We always called it "decoration day" too in my neck of the woods.  We still buy flower arrangements and take to the graves of family members who've passed.  I do hope young people continue to honor their loved ones this way whenever it comes their time to do the decorating.
