Mailboxes in rural areas question

Okay, this question is only for people who live in a rural area.  Is your mailbox across the road or your own side of the road?  Where I live I have to cross the road. They do this for the convience of the mail carrier. So people who live on the other side of the road have their box directly in front of their yard. But on my side you have to walk across the road. I wonder if this is rare or the norm?

Re: Mailboxes in rural areas question

That is the norm in our area. At my childhood home we had to drive to the mailbox about a mile. It was across the road there, too. It was a lonely mailbox sitting by itself at the intersection of two country roads.

@mormel20  It is normal at least in my area, I see them both ways on different roads, I am not sure how it is determined on what side of the road the mail box goes.

Re: Mailboxes in rural areas question

The location of the mailbox is dependent on the direction the mail carrier is driving. All mailboxes will be on the same side of the road. We have had three rural homes and all three had mailboxes across the road. However, it occurred to me that some neighbors down the way had mailboxes in front of their house because of the direction the carrier was driving.

It was that way 55 years ago I can attest.  It is because some pattern has to be decided for economy of scale.  It is just one of those things that is because of routes, house numbering, and the way things change as new customers are added.

Re: Mailboxes in rural areas question

I live in the country & all the mailboxes are on the same side of the road to accommodate the USPS vehicles so I think it's the norm...I'm happy I don't have to cross the road, folks here have a lead foot.

Re: Mailboxes in rural areas question

Ours is 99% on one side of the road but occasionally I will see one on the opposite side and wonder how they rated that.  Maybe handicapped?  We went to a PO box years ago at a different address when vandals kept smashing the boxes.  It is so secure for mailed meds and packages that we just keep it that way.  I do see smashed boxes around here occasionally.

Re: Mailboxes in rural areas question

Our mailboxes used to all be on the other side of our narrow road. As traffic got worse, the neighbors got together and met with our postmaster. He came out and agreed to put our boxes on our side of the street. Turns out when he was younger, he was hit by a car getting the mail where he had to cross the street!! We love having it on our side.

On my street the mailboxes are across the street from my house . Other streets have boxes on both sides . It's a personal choice around here where you place your boxes .
