I recently ordered a pair of sweatpants and I was notified that they were backordered and I would be notified if and when they came in.  Okay so far.

Today I received a letter telling me that unfortunately they would not be able to fulfill the order but I could go to my computer and find something else to order, and thank you very much for being a customer.

Uh, I'm not a rocket scientist about these things but if you are needing to jack up sales and you have this scenario why wouldn't you offer 10% or 20% off of something I could order as a substitute or (wait for it) free shipping on my substitute order??

As it stands now, I threw away the letter, I don't have the pants and I have not reordered anything else....no sale.  Who is making these decisions anyway?

I remember a few years ago I ordered something from HSN. It may have been one of their Today Specials. Anyway, after being notified a couple of times about the delay in the order I was informed the order couldn't be filled. They gave me a credit to my account. I can't remember the amount, $5 or $10 but it was a nice gesture that stayed with me.

@Etoile308    I can assure you they no longer do that.  I've had two TS this year that they were never able to ship and no incentive.

Happy for you but that is concerning to hear. I had an order that couldn't be fulfilled and I didn't get anything at all.

I know you can't answer this but I'd love to know why their policies and treatment of customers are SO inconsistent.

That happened to me on auto delivery orders. A couple of times I ordered auto delivery items I have received e-mails stating that they could not fill the order because they were out of stock. I was told that as soon as they received more of the item that it would be sent to me. After a few weeks I cancelled the auto delivery orders. What is the point of hosts saying never be out of a product if you are on auto delivery if they cannot fill the orders.

TeddysMom....did they bill your credit card? if so, did they issue a credit promptly?

It never made it to the billing process apparently since it was already backordered when my order came in to them.  I did check however just to be sure.  Thanks for the "heads up".

I just had the same thing happen with the halo bolt that I ordered for Christmas. It did not say it was backordered when I ordered it but now they're telling me it is and they don't know when it will be back in stock. Why are they taking orders for things that they cannot deliver?
