Can Collagen Be Absorbed Through the Skin? What Works for Healthier, Firmer Skin

3 Key Takeaways

  1. The truth about collagen in skincare
Collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin barrier, meaning they sit on the surface and can only help with hydration, not collagen production.
  2. Certain skincare ingredients help stimulate collagen production
Ingredients like peptides, retinol, and vitamin C can signal your skin to produce more collagen, improving firmness and reducing fine lines over time.
  3. Lifestyle and professional treatments also play a role
Sun protection, a balanced diet, and treatments like chemical peels, microneedling, or PDLLA all help maintain and boost collagen for healthier, more resilient skin.

@ellaphant Thank you for this post.  l posted the same a while ago. ALGENIST used to be on another shopping channel (no longer on the air) .  ShopHQ (used to be Evine) years ago.  It is the same formula today and the same sales pitch from the newer presenter..  The old presenter claimed to be the formulator/chemist.  You are correct.  Liquid collegan is impossible to penetrate the skin.  I hate false advertising. Wish QVC would follow the science.

Vitamin C, Retinol certainly can be good for outer skin care. Never seen it reverse signs of aging. Because it doesn't. If it did every Q host would have drastically different skin. 😃

Right, @ellaphant , used it for years and nothing.

It took years for the FDA to approve something so insignificant you can't notice it.

@ellaphant   Because I'm mot currently intending to buy any new skincare, I don't bother listening to the presentations.  I don't know what else is in the Algenist.

If I had been listening , I was already aware the collagen molecules could not penetrate the skin, but I did not know the second statement from the Mayo Clinic.  That one is somewhat more encouraging.

I'd also like to comment that one of the very few issues I spend much time worrying about, wrinkles rank really high.  I know why I have them and I know they are neither painful or life threatening.  Finally, now in my mid-80's I definitely would not be at all interested in any injections or any surgery meant to improve my appearance.  As soon as I cleanse and moisturize, I walk away from the mirror for hours.  I see no reason any stranger, real or virtual, cares at all.
