Clearance Items on Waitlist

If an item is on clearance, how can it be on waitlist?  I would think if five colors are offered in a handbag that's on clearance and three of the colors get sold, how can they be on waitlist?

Because, Sparklestar, someone may return an item. Then the waitlist person will get it.

That's what I thought.....Happened to me with a Bob Mackie top.....

If someone is going to pay by check & they don't pay or the check doesn't clear, that item will be available. Or someone could cancel an order.
