Re: automatic cat litter box

We have a Litter Robot.  It's expensive, almost $700.

Our cats are afraid of everything, but they used it almost immediately.

We did keep the large triangular, lidded one out for a week or so to make sure they had something to use in case they were too scared.  (If we sneeze, they hide for 3 days....they were truly feral when we brought them in, but they used the litter box immediately.)

It really helps that you don't have to constantly scoop a litter box clean.  The robot takes care of #1 and #2 within minutes.  It all goes underneath into a large plastic bag.  You can empty out the bag frequently or let it fill up and take the whole bag to the trash can outside every couple of days.  Which ever you want to do.

The litter robot does take up a lot of space.  Like 3 feet long, plus about two feet wide.  I have 3 rubber litter mats the cats have to walk across before they step onto a long bath mat (only used for the cats--not the bathroom!).  Keeps down on the litter being everywhere.

I have a Roomba that is only used in the cat area that vacuums up any litter and also vacuums the bathmat.

I guess you could say, we spent a lot of money on robotic things to take the *load* off us.  But worth it.

Re: automatic cat litter box

We have a fully enclosed litter box for Stanley Cup. It is set on a low table in our office room. The dogs can't get into it but Stanley jumps onto the table and into the box opening with ease. It has filters in the top. We use Tidy Cat litter. We scoop every day and do a full litter change every three weeks on a schedule. There is no odor in our home. The enclosed box is the secret.
I do keep an odor eliminating spray in that room for when he makes a super stinky poop. The orange 🍊 sprays that contain essential oils work fantastically. Literally in seconds.

Re: automatic cat litter box

I keep looking at them, but like other posters have mentioned, it seems messy to clean.

I use Naturally Fresh walnut litter.  I think it controls the smell and is less messy than clay litter.  I have a rubber litter mat under each litter box and that helps with the mess as well.  Honestly, what helps the most is scooping the box twice a day.  One of my cats is a petite little princess who is so proud of her poop she won't cover it up so frequent scooping is necessary.

@wagirl   My post from 7 yrs ago!

Automatic Litter Boxes. Do you own one?

Just prior to the pandemic I gave it away to my housekeeper who adopted a kitten.  I then purchased the 3rd generation.  Cost $200 then.

Re: automatic cat litter box

they keep redesigning them so obviously some of these were not worth the hassle of cleaning them.  I've heard the litter roboot  one is the best as it's self cleaning. But I would imagine it would pretty expensive, if it does that.  I'm sure over time, we'll get better ones.

Re: automatic cat litter box

@wagirl

Many years ago, I had a "LitterMaid" .. it was WONDERFUL, except I wanted it to last forever.

But some mechanism, or elastic band, that drags the "rake" thru the litter, to deposit the "waste solids" in the pan (in the back), broke.  (it might have even been one of the earliest Generation "LitterMaid").

Loved it.  but another thing, it didnt "scoop" unless the bathroom light was flicked ON.  heh  but "liveable" feature.

I lined that "solid waste box" at the back of the LitterMaid, with an opened up plastic grocery bag, and cleaning out the box, of the deposited solids, was easy peasy!  Just lift up the handles of the open, lined plastic groc bag, & voila.  Never touch anything but the grocery bag handles..

Id tried the "corn cob" litter, & I seem to remember kernel pcs only expanded, & broke down to dust,  when wet.  I found it messier & harder even to scoop manually.

With the "low Dust Clumpable Litter," sounds good.. but...  I found it dangerous, esp for "Long Haired cats."  The least little bit of litter clings to anywhere on their hair, & they're likely to swallow it. often creating "blockage" in the cat... expensive Vet bills, (or worse).

My cats never liked any litter boxes, that have any sort of "cover over the box.".. electronic, or otherwise,   So that ruled out a lot of the other choices, if that makes a difference to your cat/s

For awhile, a longgg time ago, I sprinkled baking soda with the litter, to cut down on the yuck scent.  Havent done that in a LONG while, no problem with smell now.  NOT SURE if sprinkling Baking Soda is any longer a good idea....I'd check that out for safety again, before starting up again.

Also, on regular Litter Boxes, i open up, & line regular, box Litter Boxes with  "Lawn Leaf Bags" (aka 33 gal bags) opened up, & placed over, the litter box (bag edges, tucked under the box,  lining the Litter Box, so come time to change out the *whole litter for over haul to completely fresh, just bag up the "33 gal litter bag" that is lining the Litter box.  Another easy peasy. (And of course scoop regularly.)  Some of my cats would scratch/claw holes thru the top layer of the "33 gal bag liner" so I use several layers of the "33 gal bag" to line the box. (Inevitably, when several bag layered, there'll be at least one layer they didnt scratch a hole in.)

I put a DOWNY Fabric Softener sheet BETWEEN layers of the "33 gal bags"  that line the box litter box,  (where the cats cant scratch thru the plastic, at it & be exposed to Downy).

Good luck!

My "vintage" LitterBox looked sort of like this "dated version." (below)

(I dont remember what Litter I used)
