RANT to my vet of many years who changed their policy of scheduling 30 min in the am and 30 min in the pm for emergency situations. I wish they had shared that info BEFORE I drove 30 minutes to get there.
RAVE to the wonderful people at the emergency vet who found the time to give my dog a thorough examination even though it wasn't life or death.
I ended up spending 6 hours there, observing them as they dealt with so much sadness and sickness. I felt priviledged to watch so much empathy and compassion ... and I have no idea how they manage to keep going.
RAVE to me .... for finding money in my budget to pay for pet insurance. I cried for the folks who didn't have it.
(Not that it would have necessarily been able to cure their pet, but at least they would have more information and maybe more time with their pet. )
Bottom line, my dog did not have bloat ... or anything life-threatening. And I cried with strangers.

@juanitalinda --OMG--the hardest, most heartbreaking, painful thing I have ever done in my entie life---was to schedule an appt with my vet dr to put my cat down. This happened last September--the 23rd in fact. She was 16 years old and was so sick with many issues that I had no choice but to let her go. Paid a TON of $$ the last 2 years trying to help her out. I didn't have any insurance at all--wasn't a thing in 2010 when I got her. Was sheer agony waiting to do this and all I did was bawl--couldn't talk or even left my head to look at anyone in the room. Think if someone tried to chat, I'd break down and just wail!! The people there were amazing tho--most of them had tears too, as my girl was a favorite with the staff. Got sent a sympathy card a few weeks later that everyone signed ---am still weepy about the whole thing as I write. Very glad your dog was all right and glad you are so compassionate too.

I felt like I was reliving Old Yeller when a teenage boy walked in with a stuffed animal, took his lab for a walk, went into a room with his family, and then walked out without the dog or the stuffed animal.
Doing the responsible thing can be so hard ....
I really don't know how the staff copes with that day in and day out.
@wagirl ... I was at the VEG by your place.

juanitalinda so glad for you that your dog was okay. Its very scary when you don't know what is wrong with your fur baby.
wagirl, deepest condolences for your kitty. I know how hard it is to lose them. A few years ago I had to have my 5 1/2 year old German Shepherd put down after he got cancer. He showed no signs of illness until it had progressed to a point where he started having breathing issues. A part of me died when he died. I think when you're that close to a pet, their passing just leaves a huge emptiness within you. That has been my experience anyway. Hopefully in time you can think about your baby without feeling that knot in your throat and the welling of tears in your eyes.

Most of our pets love us unconditionally, so when it's time to say good-bye, it's agonizing for many of us. I do hope they realize in the end that we are not only grateful for all the love they gave us, but that our decision to let them go is to let them be at peace.
