For me:

The time to do it was when there was simply nothing left that gave him any enjoyment in life.

When he couldn't manage the height of one step anymore:

I could lift him up and down the stairs so he could still spend time outside.

When he couldn't manage feeding himself or lapping water:

I could pulverized his food, mix it with a liquid protein supplement, hold him in my lap and feed him with a bulb syringe.

Whatever was happening, I could adapt. And he still wanted these things, and was grateful for the help.

But eventually, being warm, or fed, or having his favorite toy tucked to his side no longer gave a brief relief or diversion from his illness.

Every breath was joyless. It was time.

Beautifully said @x Hedge. So true.
