And yes, before you ask, he is heading to the Vet this week.

Just curious-  A friend has two dogs, both weimeraner (sp) that were rescues.  They are cared for meticulously but one recently was diagnosed with "protein loss."

He is shedding terribly, when he was adopted they were told he was about 2 years old.  The vet says he was probably more like 4 or 5.  Regardless, they've never heard of a dog suffering from protein loss and neither have I-  He's fed high protein food because of the amount of exercise he gets.  His activity level is crazy.

Have you any experience with this?  He's going in for more testing this week and I"m sure the vet will be grilled for as much information as they can get.    Just curious.

Was this found in his blood work?

She didn't elaborate, just asked if I had heard of it before and I hadn't.

I do think it was in his routine bloodwork from his physical.  When I google it says it's possibly related to some type of digestive issue.

I hope the poor guy is ok.  She just lost her elderly weimeraner at 15 years old -  I'm not sure how she'll handle a second pet getting sick so soon after.

Re: Protein Loss in Dogs

[ Edited ]

I have never heard of it,but I bet it is from whatever hardships the poor dog encountered in his quest for a new home.I know rescuers are wonderful and i am not putting them down ,but i think they just cannot afford to feed the poor animals all the "Best" foods and they rely mostly on the donations they get..

This poor furbaby  may have gone through some things we do not know about and his health  got depleted .

I am sure and I pray that with the love and care Your riend will  be giivng him ,he will respond and hea into a beautiful  "hairy"  n much loved furbabyl.

There are lots of weird diseases dogs can acquire.  The one I encountered in 2017 was "old dog disease".  Google it...its not rare.  My vet recognized it instantly.

My Lily has a liver shunt and can't handle protein.  My job, keep protein out of her food.  Hard, very hard.
