My older black lab needs a high fiber diet...,problem is she hates pumpkin and really all vegetables...the vet said to sprinkle benefiber on her food which I’ve done but I’d like to find a good high fiber dry or wet dog food...I spend a half hour in petco yesterday looking for one,  but theyre not labeled high fiber...I’ve seen high protein.  Any suggestions?  She’s also not really liking any of her dog food lately and seems happy eating our food..is that normal as they age? She’s my first dog as an adult, always had cats.

Re: Need a high fiber dog food

First of all, be sure and not buy any food with peas, legumes, potato, beans, because of the dcm ,in dogs  look up the lack of taurine in food, until we know for sure what is causing this, best to be safe.

Look for wheat dextrin on the label. That’s what’s in Benefiber.

@Karie2022     Benifiber is not good for helping bulk up the stool to help with elimination. I would suggest buying GROUND( not powder) psyillum husk...a

TABLESPOON to each meal... tasteless, easy to sneak into food  especially wet food.

I buy  whole psyillum husk from Vitacost.  I even take it daily myself for helping with  elimination.

Re: Need a high fiber dog food

@Karie2022   The problem with high fiber dog foods is that they all seem to be grain-free.  If you've read about the problems with some of the ingredients in grain-free foods you would probably be hesitant to feed them.  I Googled high fiber dog foods and got a list of about ten grain free foods.  I would continue adding the Benefiber or Metamucil to your dog's food.  Benefiber is tasteless, and I think Metamucil has a tasteless one, too.  The article I read also suggested that as an alternative.

@NickNack    Metamucil is just psyllium  Husk... it is cheaper to buy it bulk VS buying the brand name. Plus the bulk has nothing else added.

I'm sure your vet knows there is soluble and insoluble fiber.

Going by your post, your vet recommend you add Benefiber, which is a soluble fiber, and acts differently on the body than insoluable does.

If you are unclear just which type of fiber supplement is recommended, and why, I suggest you give your vet's office a call tomorrow morning. Improper dosing with some insoluble fiber can lead to bowel blockages.

Personally, I think your dog would be better off if you bought a good dog food formulated for seniors that appeals to your dog, and just continued to supplement with the Benefiber as your vet suggested.

Re: Need a high fiber dog food

I'm a lab owner  and love them!!   As for fiber,  I have added cooked oats to their diet.  Beet pulp is said to be very good,  but I have not tried that.   I know you said your pup doesn't like pumpkin,  perhaps mixed in with the oats, would work.    One recipe I've cooked over the years, is...either ground Turkey, beef, or chicken (depends on your dog, as for meat choices)  browned in organic coconut oil, and/or olive oil,   then add either oats, or brown rice, green beans, unsalted chicken stock,..when that's all cooked, then add tumerick and black pepper, and cook only for a few more minutes.   The tumerick and black pepper are a healthy addition, not necessary.   Black pepper works as a boost to turmeric.   All said...maybe a couple tablespoons added to your labs food would help.    I make a big batch, and freeze portions.   Hope this helpful!!

Re: Need a high fiber dog food

Wheat dextrin is not something I would use for either me or my dog.

Could you find more about why the vet said more fiber?  Soluble or not?

I had a girl on high fiber rx diet, but she had a lot medical problems.
