Re: In memory of courageous Military Working Dogs

OMG!  One of my favorite shows on TV is "Navy Seals".  I love the German Shepherd the Seal always brings with him.

He's totally part of the team and has saved their butts so many times it's impossible to count!  The dog goes everywhere with them.

I love it when they jump from the plane.  The dog is strapped to the Seal's chest, he has on his own goggles, etc.

The dog eats with them and does everything they do.  When they go into a building, the dog goes first and signals if there's someone in the room or if it's full of explosives, etc.

I agree, those dogs are very hard workers.

Here's the cutie in his goggles ready to jump the plane with his buddy.  On the TV show "Navy Seals" the dog is strapped to his chest with the goggles on.  I love this!

@dooBdoo  Thank you for this post and also for the beautiful photo of the military dog memorial.  I am not sure if the majority of the public even thinks about the work and sacrifice that military dogs make for us.

@Annabellethecat66  Love the picture of those goggles!  Thanks!

It isn't very well known, but cats also played a part in the military. So not only do I salute the dogs but the cats, too.

Re: In memory of courageous Military Working Dogs

On this Memorial Day I will remember not only those most deserving dogs but ALL the animals who have lost their lives in the service of freedom. The horses and mules and carrier pidgons and all the others in harness and service Before the invention of tanks, trucks and radio.  Since the Civil war and before, they've all done their part on the battlefields and I will wear my purple poppy in rememberance  Lest We Forget.

The military dogs are certainly heroes. I’m glad some of them get to return with their handlers.

During my husbands’ second tour in Vietnam there was a puppy. My husband being a dog lover took care of him and named him Luke after Cool Hand Luke, the movie.

Luke would warn him of incoming rounds before the sirens sounded. My husband would roll out of the bunk then join others in the bunker.

Once they were in the bunker and he asked “Where  is Luke.”They said he went to each of them to wake them and must be still inside.

Luke didn’t come when called. It wasn’t far so my husband ran to his bunk and lying under it and the sandbags was Luke wagging his tail.

The men gave him an award and he was everyone’s dog but slept with my husband. Back then the troops weren’t allowed to bring dogs home. He tried but they wouldn’t make an exception.

We never learned what became of Luke but we hoped he continued his job of warning the soldiers.

Sad they couldn't bring back the dogs...I can't tell you how sad that makes me feel!!!! Woman Sad

Thank you to all of you for your posts!   @1Snickers,  My gratitude to your husband for his service and courage, and thank you for sharing the poignant story of Luke.   So sad he couldn't travel home with his fellow warriors, but I know he has a permanent, prominent place in their hall of honor.   @Gorgf,  What a lovely thought to gather and send those carefully-chosen supplies not only for the men and women but also for the service animals!    Great idea we all can pass along to our communities.   @Annabellethecat66,  Thanks for the heads up about the Navy Seals show!    @spiderw,  @Sushismom,  and @candys mine,  Thank you for the reminder about all of the other animals who provide invaluable support with their bravery and unconditional love.

I rarely start threads, but when I do I'm so appreciative of everyone who takes time to read, to offer a word or two or add hearts to one another's posts, and to share your thoughts.    It's a reminder of the true "community" coming together on these forums.    Y'all are the best!    Good wishes to all of you!❤️
