This is a fairly common procedure for cats. I had an cat with feline HIV from a cat bite & after many years developed Stomatitis, which made her gums & eating very painful. I was like you thinking that it was cruel to extract most of her teeth, but the Vet assured me that Cats do Not use their teeth to chew food & do quite nicely without them. You will need to give this cat pain meds for approx 3 days (2X per day) from a pre-loaded syringe (no needle involved) & they will just sleep & be perfectly fine. Good-luck with the kitty & God Bless you for taking care of it for your friend!
Cats don't use their teeth to chew food? They certainly do when they eat the natural meat and raw bones diet they were designed to eat. My cats absolutely use their teeth, in fact their teeth are specifically designed in their mouth to do the job they need to do to survive. Their canines are perfectly spaced to break the necks of mice and they use the rest of their teeth to rip meat and chew up bones and meat.
The commerical foods that people feed them, no they really don't chew those, because they are so processed.

Update:
She is doing very well. The challenge is keeping her away from the hard food until we pass day 10 in her recovery.
She keeps following me from room to room and is inisistent that I be within her line of vision. So I keep moving my laptop as I work on projects. Right now she si napping (I think.)
If there is any pain or discomfort, she hasn't shown in. She is a little grumpy, but basically this is a sweet cat. I had emailed her pet mom and expressed concern over her warm face. That is what exactly what happens to humans. The face is warm and the body cool.
I was scolded for "projecting." But she did have a serious infection and they did remove quite a lot of teeth. I have had extractions and I remember feeling feverish as i recovered. Poor cat can't express how she's feeling. But would Friend like it if I expressed no concern?
Anyway that's my update.

Wow, I guess we can just be grateful she got the medical care she needed. But her "owner" doesn't really impress me much. Didn't they give the cat antibiotics to take? Cats do have a higher body temp than humans. Did she leave you the post op paperwork, it should have a list of things to look for and when you should contact the vet.

Thanks for asking.
I was left a paper which said what they had done during the procedure. They administered antibiotics and pain mediication through an injection which was supposed to last about a week. I know cats run warmer than humans, but it was her face compared against her body which was cool. We hadn't had the scorching hot temps yet. And there is air conditioning.
They didn't leave me with a list of things to look for. They also said she was "sweet" and that they enjoyed taking care of her.
She is here on the bed as I type. Such a lovely animal. I wish my life were different. I would have adopted her for sure.

Tomorrow you can always call the vet and ask what they think regarding the warmer face.

@JavaQueen, it sounds like kitty is getting along pretty well. I hope the warm face turns out to be nothing. I'm so glad you're there to care for her. It sounds like you both like each other very much and enjoy being together. Thanks for being there for kitty.
