@eddyandme. My pug, who just passed away, was a picky eater, but it was totally my fault.  She never wanted to eat her dry food, but wanted what I was eating.  Once I gave her some of my food...I taught her that she didn't have to eat her food.  This taught her that it was okay to beg for food.  Of course I thought all this was cute and that I was being a great pug mom, until she was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 10 years old.  She had to get insulin injections twice a day and that didn't keep her blood levels normal.  She lost her sight and hearing due to diabetes and then the seizures began.

Please teach your pet to eat the proper food.  There is no guarantee that this will prevent certain diseases as the dog gets older, but it does give your pet a better chance at a healthy life.

@Trudey  If you were feeding Trudey meat and vegetables, I doubt that is why she got diabetes.  If you were giving her people cookies or cake, crackers, etc maybe.  If you give your pet their food at the place where they eat, they won't beg.  Never feed them while you are at the table or if you are having a snack at night sitting on the couch, etc.  We never had a problem with begging.  All we had to say was "go lay down" and they did.  Even while driving 3 days in the car to Florida, DH and I would have the occasional snack in the car. Smiley Happy  The dogs knew not to beg then either.

I have to ask, is the new puppy you are getting already born yet?  Are you excited?  My DH is ready to get another dog.  I have to wrap my head around the idea.  I am happy for you and your DH.

@eddyandme  I wouldn't saute the green beans.  Give them raw - more nutrition.  When I peeled potatoes, I handed out a few chunks.  Also gave half an apple everyday, raw mini carrots, sweet potato, cauliflower, brocolli, tomatoes, pea pods, watermelon, you name it, I gave it, they loved it. I never had a problem with loose stools or gas.  I also gave probiotics.

@tends2dogs

Only have Green Giant canned green beans, not fresh.  Haven't given him raw broc only steamed and he only likes summer squash/zuc sauteed.  Usually steam the potatoes and mash with skins on; haven't tried cauliflr/sweet potato yet; others he loves raw - all melons especially, as well as berries.  I sprinkle Dynovite (probiotics) over his food once a day and few times weekly Extend (joint care) plus a daily glucosomine "cookie" from the vet.  Shadow also loves herring, eggs, yogurt and milk.  He eats pretty healthy, but he's just not into kibble lately which I want him to eat 'cause of the vitamins and minerals.  Oh yeah, add apples and pears to the list - that boy eats better than me!  Thanx.

Re: COULD USE SOME ADVICE...

@geezerette

I haven't given him canned food 'cause rescue said not too because it's mostly water.  Used to buy canned food for Jade - only way she'd eat kibble - and, she d/n like the expensive ones, preferred the grocery store brands.  But, always gave her the really good kibbles, Blue Wilderness, Royal Canin, etc.  Jade wasn't into fruit, except an occasional tomato from the garden; only ate cooked carrots.  Since Shadow came here he's eaten everything - no problem.

I'm beginning to wonder if you're right about the extra attention.  My instincts told me when he came here that he was sort of second-fiddle - not sure, just a feeling I got watching him play in the snow and jumping (wasn't supposed to) paying ball with four adults looking on and clapping - he seemed to savor the attention!  Began a nitely ritual of cuddling/belly rubs/praising him - at first he just didn't know what to do and just layed on his bed:  now he runs to bed and loves out nightime ritual.  He gets plenty of praises and hugs and kisses in the daytime, too, as he lets me know when he wants some lovin.  Perhaps, the hand-feeding is required for awhile and maybe that will solve the kibble problem.  I really think you've hit on something 'cause even when we have our treats we're interacting or at least together - whenever I sit down, he'll partially lay on my foot - for some reason he must need the extra touching.

Thanx.

Re: COULD USE SOME ADVICE...

@Tends2dog . Our future puppy is not born yet.  Our breeder is expecting puppies in September.  I'm praying for the health of the mama pug and all her babies.  I really want another fawn female, so we'll just have to wait and see if "our puppy" arrives in this litter.

We are excited Smiley Happy  Knowing that a new puppy is coming, allows me to still grieve over my sweet Trudey, while looking forward to the future.

When you decide to get another pet, do you think you'll get a puppy or an older dog?  I have been looking at pug rescue sites, in case we don't get "our puppy".

@goldensrbest

Thanx.  You also reminded me, I bought a big can of salmon for Jade, but she never ate it.  Was gonna make some creamed salmon on toast for me, but, will mix it in, little at a time with Shadow's kibble!

@Trudey

So very sorry for your loss.  I understand because I still ache from the loss of my Jade.

I try to be very careful with what I'm feeding Shadow-Jaden, especially with his orthopedic issues.  But, thank you very much for your advice.  Again, sorry for your loss.Heart

Re: COULD USE SOME ADVICE...

I feed my dog a raw diet daily. He knows he is served this "treat" just once daily, and always around dinner time. The highlight of his day! He will eat his kibble when he wants it, usually am amd pm. This works for both of us. Hope it will work for you, too.

Hi!  I have two poodles.  I feed kibble in the AM and in the evening, they eat raw.  They dance when they are awaiting their dinner, but sometmes do not finish their AM kibble.

I just pick up their bowls and feeding time is over.  They have a way of adjusting, over time.  I do not worry.

As a treat, usually on the weekends, I sprinkle grated parmesan cheese on their kibble.

They really like it!

@rrpell

Special thanks!  I tried leaving a little kibble in his bowl for supper:   he just sat next to it watching my make myself a sandwich.  I had picked up a grated parm/romano cheese (Paul Newman 'cause that had the best ingredients) and sprinkled a bit onto his kibble.  Suddenly, he got up and scooped it all up into his cute little belly!  Then he gave me that "Momma, you didn't give me enough" look, so I put another little bit of kibble in his bowl:  he looked and waited for the cheese to be sprinkled onto it:  then again scooped it all up.  As I was sitting down to eat my sandwich, Shadow came over to let me know he would like even more of the kibble sprinkled with the parm!  He didn't ask for desert as he usually does, just wanted more of the kibble.  Of course he got another little bit and licked his bowl totally clean!

So thank you very much.  I did stock up on all kinds of fresh veggies today along with an entire watermelon and cantaloupe, plus his fave yogurt which I use for ice cream.  Looks like the boy will be eating - and eating healthy, as the small amount of cheese sprinkled won't add many calories!

Have a nice day!

Re: COULD USE SOME ADVICE...

@eddyandme   Oh, I'm so happy that worked! I enjoyed reading about your success. Shadow made me smile😀.   I thought of something else... Have you tried replacing some of the kibble with canned (plain) pumpkin (not the pie filling)?  I take it out of the can and store in a container in the fridge.  I usually add a couple of Tablespoons on top of their crunchies. (I don't mix it in.)  They like it and the vet says it is good for their systems.

Hi @eddyandme - I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions for you.  I just wanted to say that it was heart-warming reading your attempts and care in regards to feeding your dog.

Know that you're a good Mom.

Wishing you and your dog the best.
