How to teach a child to blow their nose

I have twin 7 yr. old grandsons who do not get the concept of blowing their nose, especially when sick with a cold.  We have tried all kinds of things to no avail.  When they get sick, there is so much mucus that they throw up at night sometimes.  My dtr. tried using an aspirator like she did when they were little to suck it out.  That seemed to help last night and my grandson said it tickled.  But we want them to learn to blow their nose.  I thought of making it a game by taking a piece of paper folded and putting it under their nose  holding it out.  Draw a target on the paper and see if they could blow out through their nose and hit the target.  Any tips on what to do would be appreciated.  TIA

Re: How to teach a child to blow their nose

This was back in the Eisenhower administration, but I can remember what my Mom did with me.  Sounds simplistic, but here goes...she held a tissue over my nostrils, gently held one side closed, and told me to blow.  Then did it on the other side.  Then next time, she told me to do it on my own.  Kids will be proud to say "I did it all by myself".

@WORKING GAL if you google:  How to teach a child how to blow their nose

Many items come up. I wish I could link but we are not allowed to link websites here because the security issues by hackers posing as posters.

Anyway, if you have not already,  try teaching them when they are NOT sick. They will be more cooperative because they are not feeling like crud.

7 years old is twice as old if not more than the average age kids learn this. If they are developmentally behind, physically they can do this at this age unless severely afflicted.
