Re: my project this week…my walk-in pantry revamp!

@homedecor1 - I wish you all the best with your project! But for what it's worth, a few years ago, I stopped using the OXO Pop containers because they didn't keep most of my dry goods very fresh, including flour, rice, and cereals/oats. It seemed like the button-and-gasket system didn't really seal out all the air, and it was not possible to check to see how effective the lid might be overall. Other OXO containers still work well for me, and I have had luck with all of my Lock & Lock pantry containers sealing and working well, so I'm sticking with them until they start to fail. (I'm guessing that after many years pass and the silicone inserts from any of these tab-lock containers are washed over and over, seals eventually will just lose their grip and not have the same tight, strong shape they had initially to provide a perfect "lock.")

thank you I went to Costco they had them & that was exceptional price!

I also stopped at Bed Bath & Beyond one of the largest & nicest I've been in.  I bought the other sizes and best thing : Had $20 off $80 and $15 off $30 they honored them🙂🙂🙂

(I bought new liner for my shelves too).

My walk-in pantry was suppose to be my laundry room but whoever built this house wanted in garage🙄🤷‍♀️.  Since all the plumbing is under concrete too costly to move inside, therefore, used to be my "kitty" room.

After he passed I completely cleaned it and sanitized.  Now I have nice shelving units and drawer units.  my dream is to have cabinet system with pull out drawers & nice countertop. (I'll have to hit lottery😉).

As for "stock up" since spouse eats smaller & lighter now I don't have a lot of extras BUT have lots of bakeware, small appliances, etc. so now everything has a spot since my kitchen has limited cabinets (galley style).

My LNL pantry set is about 10 years old.  The seals & flip top seals I feel have "lost" their seal from I'm sure washing & are discolored.

The pieces I recently bought are not the same quality -- they don't always seal properly in the flip section.  That being said - I'm not putting my flour, sugars, etc. in the OXO ones.  My LNL square pieces are fairly new and seal perfectly.

I'm going to do a "test" to see how they hold up for "freshness" before deciding because they are expensive.  although, I've had my 10x and various choc chips, coconut, etc. in them for months and they are working well.

I've used a OXO for my ground coffee for 10 years at least.  Get used every day!  Works great and still keeps the coffee fresh.

I have the rectangular LnLs for snacks and they do not keep chips fresh.

Re: my project this week…my walk-in pantry revamp!

@homedecor1 - Ah, yes, that's a very good distinction to make—the flip-top containers definitely do not keep things fresh; the seal is just not tight not enough (and sometimes there isn't even any silicone there). I just use the tall containers that are the same size and shape as the flip-top pantry containers but have the standard-style lid.

Re: Update 😊😊my project this week…my walk-in pantry revamp!

[ Edited ]

a crappy rainy day here in FL so I got "motivated" &  5 hours later ...my pantry is semi-done and carryover in pantry/utility room almost there💃-- wish I had taken before pics it was a mess🤷‍♀️

  • bought & lined the shelves with closet maid liner made for them (which I ❤️)
  • whole bag of old flip top LNLs (they're 10+ years old got my $ out of them😉)
  • 2 bags of non expired items for food pantry (I must get my BOGOs back under control)
  • and lastly, a garbage bag of those darn "little amounts" of snacks, nuts, etc. they are stale..would feed to birds but not a good idea here -

I absolutely love the OXO style as they stack so well!  I did buy at Costco $59.99) as suggested but 2 pieces I don't know what I'll use them for as I just bought cereal keeper from LNL.  And a few specialized sizes at BB&B used my better coupons because they aren't cheap😉 although $$ well spent. (I keep all my flour, sugar, 10x, brown sugars, etc and most my baking ingredients already in these - changed over about 6 months ago).

Funniest thing -- spouse never notices anything but he noticed this..he said "Wow so much better".

Next project - toss all mismatched LNLs they nest great but the lids all look alike🤦‍♀️ It's like a puzzle every time I want one.  Many are "old & tired" ...I did put the good ones aside for the food pantry bag as one can always use storage containers😊

I don't know how I am the only one that has zero issues with my L&L's. I have L&L's throughout. I've used them soley for the past 10-15 years! I have never had any tabs break, never. None of my containers have discolored. I have an awful lot in my collection. My pantry is in pristine order with all of my pantry items in their own L&L container. Love my L&L kitchen!

Oh I'm jealous - I'd love an organized pantry!   I have a few Oxo contains and agree, they are so much better than others.  I bought mine at Kohls when I had 30% off.

@ID2

Yes, I agree but my containers were not "sealing" like I expected but then again they were over 10 years old.  Many dishwasher washings and use.

Here in FL its super humid and I know those little "creepy bugs" love to invade things here.

I do have many bowls, etc. that are still perfect.

But as far as broken tabs lately I'm experiencing this but then again I don't wash by hand, I always run them through the dishwasher.
