What kind of kitchen sponge works best for cleaning things like cheese graters, box graters, microplanes?  I like Scotch Brite Dobie for most things. It rinses clean and doesn't scratch non-stick cookware.  But its shredded after its tackled the grater.

I put the box grater in the DW.

The sponge I use is Brillo Estracell. Good Housekeeping seal. It never stinks!

I use a regular sponge without the plastic coating on it. No issues with shredding on box graters or microplane.

I never use a sponge as they're incubators for bacteria.  My choice is a brush with a handle that holds detergent.  It easily cleans rough surfaces as wellas Teflon.

@mizree - I use a sponge that has a sponge side and a scrubby side.  I don't think the type of sponge or cloth you use makes much difference.  I just make sure I wash/scrub in the direction of the holes (so opposite of what you would do to shred) or across them, just not against them.  On the back side you can go either direction.  That method has always worked for me whether zester, microplane, or box grater.  A scrub brush would probably work well for the side of a box grater that has the zillion tiny holes.

I found the Scrub Daddy sponges that are very similar to Dobie at Walmart, these are great and last forever. Stays clean and fresh. They come 3 in a pack.

I don't use a sponge for that. I've always used dish cloths with netting on the "scrubber" side, like the ones below, and they work well for graters and such.

Shelbelle, last FOREVER? Nothing lasts forever, esp. sponges. 2 weeks max is what is recommend for replacement.

These still look perfect after much longer than that.  They stay fresher and cleaner than a Dobie pad.

I use Scrub Daddy's for pots and pns and put them in the dish washer every day.  I still have to replace them often.  They don't last too long.

I would clean a box grater with a brush.  These cutter kitchen tools would shread any type of sponge.  I also put the graters in the dishwasher.

I am not a big sponge person...they harbor bacteria.
