we just moved into a condo, that has an older gas stove. the burners have black grates/grids, that need some cleaning. could i clean in dishwasher-top rack, or is that too harsh? looks like they had a black shiney coating, that has worn off. any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks.

When I moved up here about 10 years ago, the house had an old gas range. Always said that if it so much as burped it would be trash. Still waiting.
I put the grids, drip pans, burner covers and burner gas thingys in the dishwasher along with the plastic knobs. It does get so dirty and they all need suds.

I clean my grates from my gas stove outside with the grill brush and a bucket of soap and water, then rinse with the hose. Dry them with an old towel. They come out better that way and I'm not worried about dirtying my kitchen sink. There is even that new Dawn dish cleanser that you spray and let sit for few minutes before cleaning. That stuff works wonders! @10sluvr

I just got a replacement for my five-year-old gas GE Profile cooktop that developed a gas leak.
Instructions say to wash grates in the dishwasher.
That's what I did with the previous ones.
The grates seem to survive the dishwasher very nicely. I know of no other way to clean those heavy things and really get them clean.

I ,too, have a gas stove . I put my GRATES in a large trash bag with about a cup of straight ammonia in it . Seal the bag and put on a baking tray or tub laying flat .I leave it overnight . Everything wipes right off ! It’s the vapors that clean it .
Do NOT put ammonia IN the oven ,though !!!!

I spray "Easy-Off Fume-Free" oven cleaner on the grates and let sit for about 40 minutes. Then wipe off the foam with rags and clean with warm, soapy water.

I just used Barkeepers friend for the first time. It was amazing how easy that was to use.

Wow, you all go to lots more trouble than I do. I just put mine in the dishwasher, per manufacturer's instructions.
Perhaps you have a small grate over each burner?
I have a large 5-burner cooktop size 36 x 20 inches. It has only three huge grates that each weigh a ton. Can't imagine washing them by hand. The dishwasher makes quick work of them--when I get up the energy to lift them.
I'm on my first experience with gas cooking, so I don't know about all the gas stoves out there. If you have small grates over each burner, you're more fortunate than I am.
