The KA lady mixed mashed potatoes with the wire whisk. Is this normal? I have always used the flex-edge beater for this. I also didn't like the texture of her finished product. It looked very lumpy. I normally do a quick hand mash before putting them in the bowl and adding butter and buttermilk.

She noted the wire whisk is used so potato's don't become starchy. The wire whisk allows "air" to fluff them.
She made them "chunky" by not adding lots of milk. Although, if you like smoother mashed potatoes then you could add more milk.
I use the wire whisk for mashed potatoes when I am making a big amount -- not anymore just the 2 of us & mashing the good ole' fashion way using a potato masher and they turn out fine.

I prefer a potato ricer most of the time.

I use my hand mixer - no need to pull out the big mixer and have to wash that big bowl. I mash mine right in the pot.

Agreed. This gives the smoothest mashed potatoes. No lumps at all.
