I'm having company over for traditional sauerkraut and pork for New Years Day dinner. I can't decide what to make for dessert. is there a dessert that is traditional to serve on New Years day?

Re: What to make for dessert???

This is traditional in our family also.

A fresh apple crumble makes for a good dessert, unless you are serving apple sauce.

Re: What to make for dessert???

It's not totally homemade, but I get 2 boxes of jello cheesecake mix, prepare it in a 9x13 pan and top it off with cherry or blueberry pie filling. It's light, super easy and everyone loves it. Gone in a flash at Christmas and no one knows it's a box mix. If I use the cherry filling I add a little almond extract to the cheesecake mix. I make it ahead of time and freeze it, taking it out the day of the party to thaw. But add the pie filling before serving-don't freeze.

Re: What to make for dessert???

I also like the idea of an apple dessert. The directions for this Apple Lasagna recipe that Lilbitmissty provided states that the sour cream sauce is optional-- believe me, it's not! For me, it's one of the tastiest things about this recipe. I nver knew just these two ingredients could taste sooooo good!!!!..............vabreeze

 Apple Lasagna

1 lightly beaten egg
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp almond extract
2 - 21 oz. cans apple pie filling (or make your own version)
6 lasagna noodles - cooked, rinsed and drained

Mix egg, cheeses, sugar and extract. Set aside
Spread one can of apple pie filling into a 13 X 9 inch baking dish, coated well with nonstick spray. Top with three cooked lasagna noodles, then cheese mixture. Layer with 3 more lasagna noodles, and another can of apple pie filling.

Topping:
1/3 cup flour (= 6 TBS???)
1/4 cup quick cooking oats
dash of nutmeg
3 TBS. butter
1/3 cup brown sugar (=6 TBS???)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Cut butter into dry ingredients until crumbly. Sprinkle over filling. Bake at 350° - uncovered - for 45 to 50 minutes, or until bubbly and heated through. Let stand at least 15 minutes.

Sour Cream Sauce- <s>optional</s> a MUST!
Mix 3/4 cup sour cream

3 TBS.brown sugar

Serve a dollop on top of each serving of apple lasagna.

Good...and different!

This has become my New Year's Eve dessert tradition since I stumbled across the recipe in 2012.

For something chocolately, how about Ina Garten's "Frozen Mocha Mousse"? You can make early and keep in the freezer. I made it for Christmas and it is very good.

Re: What to make for dessert???

I just made this Mocha Nut Torte for Christmas dessert and it was a big hit. Super easy. It is very light, so would go well with your menu. These types of nut tortes are originally from eastern Europe.

Re: What to make for dessert???

Find terrier3's recipe for poached pears in red wine on this board. It is beautiful, reasonably healthy and easy to make. I served it with a scoop of Trader Joe's French Vanilla Ice Cream. It was a real hit!

THANK YOU TERRIER3!!!
