I agree. The party will be at least a couple of hours and that turns into dinner time.

since there will be only 8 people, I would add a small cheese/fruit tray from the grocery store in case someone does want a snack prior to the cake and ice cream....OP and her DH can eat the leftover cheese and fruit .

3:30 would be Margarita and snack time. If the guests stay later than 5 order pizza and relax. Tell your DH to have a ball and enjoy!

I think that you should stick to cake and ice cream. When you invited the people who plan to attend, you told them that's what you're planning to serve....and they may have plans for evening meals or what time they eat their lunch on Friday.

i would do some bite sized appetizers..... a few suggestions.....mini pizzas, pot stickers, cheeses, meatballs, 7 layer dip, maybe a "taco bar" with all of the fixings and tortilla chips?

Too late to be lunch, too early to be dinner but I would definitely have some food. Some light finger foods. I wouldn't do meatballs or anything with sauces or gravies. Perhaps a cheese & cracker platter or chip and dips, a fruit tray. Maybe even a tray of little sandwiches.

Cake, ice cream, some fruit is perfect. Drinks soda, wine etc, coffee.
I agree! ABSOLUTELY only things you need are the ice cream and cake, and tea and coffee--or lemonade and such. People don't need a pre-meal at this time of day. Enjoy the desserts and some fruit and concentrate on having a good time!
I also agree, what you originally planned is enough at this time of day.

When did people start having to have a mini meal in the afternoon?

I guess I'm the odd one out but I think this is an off time for such an event. Cake and ice cream at that time is sort of a pre-meal. I would never eat that at that time of the day. Maybe it's because we eat relatively early because my DH eats lunch at 11:00 and is starved, but having cake at that time would interfere with our dinner time.
