I've been buying watermelon slices from my favorite local grocer. They sell local produce in the summer, and the watermelon has been good. I may be wrong but it seems like the produce from Walmart is most likely picked too early and of course none of it is grown locally in my area. I generally avoid buying much of anything from their produce department.

The same exact thing happened to us last week! It was very strange and extremely disappointing.
We had purchased a whole seedless watermelon from Costco only a few days before. I have been buying Costco watermelons for years now. They are always tastier than what I buy at the supermarket. Not this time though. A total disappointment.
I have never had that happen with a watermelon either. It's hard to explain how odd the texture was. It's like it wasn't ripe, but it was. It smelled right and looked right, but was very hard. Terrible!

I love watermelon. I prefer ones with seeds. I think the seedless ones have less flavor.
But my favorite is a yellow watermelon. I stumbled across a quarter of one in early June and it was so good. Today they had a big box of them, whole, outside the door. I was excited and expected to see some cuts inside but they didn't have any; only big whole ones. Boo.

Too much rind to get rid of. Have to put in garbage can and give to garbage man
In my younger days when I had 20 acres to myself up in Ind I'd just throw out the back door and sometimes the seeds would turn into small melons.
Now days I'd be afraid to pitch anything out . Ants and critters around at night.

Wow! After picking up a watermelon wedge today and reading this thread, I decided not to wait for our 'tea time' when me and my furbaby have an afternoon snack. You all were right!! This melon was soft, but tasteless! I've never had one like this. Glad I only purchased a small wedge.
On a positive note, Eddy enjoyed the watermelon with vanilla ice cream - he even ate mine! So, it won't go to waste. Guess we'll be doing everything but watermelons.....

I bought a whole watermelon, cherry plums and bi-color corn at Walmart this past week. Everything was super delicious.
I bought a whole pineapple from Costco. When I bought it, it was firm and nice, when I cut into it, the next day, it was soft, mushy and overripe..smelled like vodka . I had to throw it out.
You just can never tell with fruit until you Get it home and bite into it.

Love watermelon. I have bought 3 so far and all were good.
I eat it with bananas and it hard to put away.I have bought 2 from
grocery stores and the other from a produce shop. Here in PA they
are sweet and delicious.

Grapeland, TX. Their watermelon has never disappointed. Use to be a 30 mile
trip for me to pick one up, which I didn't mind, but now they bring in a truck to sell closer to me.
I'm a very good customer. ![]()

Seeing this post was so timely because just last evening I cut open a watermelon and was shocked at how bad it was. My husband and I love watermelon and have always purchased them throughout the summer months. This year we have purchased 6 or more and out of all of them, only two were decent.
I had just commented to him I wonder if we are just getting bad ones or if others are finding them as bad in different areas of the country.
It's so frustrating to spend the money and be anticipating a dish of delicious watermelon and then cutting it to find a substandard product.
I'm just assuming the weather is playing a big part in the quality of them this year.

Hear, hear! Happened to me to, on the 12th of last month, my son's 21 birthday.
I was going to try the watermelon, cucumber, and mint salad mentioned on another thread, to take to a birthday dinner.
I got the watermelon at Walmart and it is the first time I've ever had any problem.
The color was light pink, flavorless, and mushy in the center. It was called "All Heart", seedless.
The salad was horrible. The watermelon was horrible.
I explained to the hostess what had happened, and it was funny, because there was a painting of a pale pink watermelon in the dining room.
