Do you ladies still use plastic containers?  My sister only uses glass. She says plastic is toxic, even just storing food in it.

Do do you agree?  Any thoughts?

 I don't think this is true.

We have been using plastic for many years, we don't put them in the microwave. Just think of all the plastic wrap used in stores, fresh meat, cheeses, breads, vegetables, etc. Since BPA-free has been introduced, I think it is much safer because it doesn't leach harmful chemicals for now.

Food grade plastic is certainly safe and dozens of scientific articles as well as consumer protection agencies test this and offer proof. Loads of food is stored and distributed in plastic even in hospitals and in emergency situations like the hurricane relief happening even now. When was the last time you bought milk in a glass bottle? Public safety is regulated to a good extent to protect people from food storage dangers, and logic should prevail even without academic study.

It is doubtful your sister or anyone who is likeminded can be convinced otherwise as people believe what they want to and can't really accept plastic for reasons important to them. If I were able to supply a few proofs that glass might have  inherent food storage dangers, would they change their minds that only glass is safe? Unlikely.

Products like Lock & Lock and even the disposable food storage containers bought in supermarkets are suitable and safe. You either believe that or choose not to and invest in glass storage.

Break a glass food container by dropping it on the kitchen floor and safety becomes an issue when shards are there to slice your feet. But still, you won't suffer toxic food problems...Smiley Very Happy

I use both.  If it is something I am going to reheat I put it in a glass container.  I just made ham salad and because we will eat it cold I put it in a plastic container.  I did get rid of my very old plastic containers.

I use both.  I never thought about that it's not safe as others say it's used so widely and has been for years.  I have never heard about it being unsafe.  At this time I certainly hope not.  I should think by now there would have been reports and findings of people getting sick.  I tend to be more worried about our water.  So many reports of entire towns getting sick.  Our small city has boil water advisories ALL the time.  This entire past summer I kept smelling a musty odor when running our water.  Husband said it was all in my head.  Wouldn't you know, I come home from work a few weeks back and there was a message from the Mayor of the boil water advisory.

@Ditzydori

Nice to see you posting.

I prefer glass, it seems to never degrade.

No matter how careful I am with plastic, they look awful after about a year and need to be replaced.

I'm never sure plastic is clean, I know when my glass containers are clean.

I use both. And I treat them the same. I put them both through the dishwasher sanitizing cycle and microwave, They both come out just fine. In fact I have a set of Lock and Lock and Rubbermaid. They both are still in good shape. I also have a set of pyrex.

I use them all.
