all veggie stuff goes to compost, and all other stuff goes in the garbage grinder , the thought of food in the kitchen trash can is icky

Hi, there is no tool that came with disposal.  We looked for a button but didnt see one!

The tool is an Allen wrench; the reset button is on the bottom of the unit - you can feel for it.

If you clean under the splash guard regularly you will  not have any stink

I would follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Re: Suggestions for Garbage Disposal

Our disposal is resturant grade and we haven't ever had an issue.

We use lemon rind for freshness.

Re: Suggestions for Garbage Disposal

When we remodeled our kitchen years ago, we took out the disposal and did not replace it.  We don't use it so it would be a waste of money.  We compost peelings, rinds, egg shells, etc.  Bones and other non-compostables go in the trash where they belong not down the pipes,

Re: Suggestions for Garbage Disposal

I occasionally run ice and lemon juice through the disposer.  Most times I take a long handled kitchen brush to clean off any food that remains up high inside the disposer, then put the brush in the dishwasher to clean it.

Re: Suggestions for Garbage Disposal

Years ago I got a set of garbage disposal cleaning items from QVC and some of it has been really handy.

One thing is that it came with a brush like this (image below) that is really cool because you push it through and brush around, then bring it up to where the wide part is right below that rubber piece, then you can move it around the underside of that to help cleaning it.

I will take the dish soap and spray a ring around that bottom part of the brush, so I'm scrubbing that underside with soap.  Works great!

Sidebar:  Many years ago, when I still had a cleaning lady, I always just assumed she cleaned that area and never really thought about it.  I didn't have odor problems (and I'm very sensitive!), so it was never in my purview.

Well, one day I dropped something down there.  Foolishly (never did it again w/o a glove) I stuck my hand down there.  As I pulled my hand back up and out I saw all this black stuff and I just don't know what all.  It was so gross!!!   After that it was in my purview.  Smiley Very Happy
