Just got a brand new ss gas range.  It had some sticky packing residue on the bottom drawer and I used Bar Keepers Secret (which I purchased for my sink) on a small area,  Now that area is shinier than the rest of the drawer!  Bar Keepers specifically says it cleans Stainless steel!  How can I "dull" down the area???

Do NOT use this product on stainless!!  Should have just kept wiping with my SuperCloth which I ordered more of today!!!!

I use Bar Keepers Friend on all my Stainless, especially my pots and pans and love the product.  It is definitely safe on Stainless steel.  If your only complaint is that the spot you used Bar Keepers Friend is now twice as shiny as the rest of the drawer, you might want to consider using it on the rest of the drawer up to the level the spot is.... or I'd just leave it and see if the spot "settles down" with time and air on it.

Re: Stainless Steel Help!

@bargainsgirl

I feel your pain.  I would contact the manufacturer and ask them.  If there is not a contact number on the can, you can "google" them and get a phone number.

You really didn't damage the stainless steel, but the brushed finish.  I would just leave it be for now and keep searching the internet for fixes.  I know you are not the first person to have this happen and you are just heart sick over it.

My SS refrigerator has a few areas where the brushed surface got grazed somehow and it does show up as a shiny mark.

Is your range real stainless steel or is it gray metallic?

Bar Keepers Secret is fine for real stainless steel but will tend to leave an 'off finish' to faux ss.

If you leave it alone, it will probably dull-down (oxidize) on its own,

I just contacted Bar Keepers and they said it is NOT for use on SS  appliances!!!!!  It does NOT state this on the bottle.  They are going to get back to me.  The product is fine for glossy sinks and pots and pans.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT BARKEEPER'S FRIEND CLEANSERS

There are three different kinds:

--The powdered cleanser which "may etch some surfaces, including porcelain."

--Soft liquid cleanser containing oxalic acid  that "removes rust, lime, stains, water deposits  and tarnish.  Directions on bottle say to use sparingly and rub gently on brushed stainless steel, fiberglas, plastic and aluminum.  Do not use on gold, silver, polished stone or surfaces that are lacquered, painted or mirrored.

--Liquid cleanser that contains citric acid---labeled as great for use on stainless steel sinks and cookware.

There are more precautions listed on all three containers.  I have all three and use only the citric acid type and very rarely.   I'm afraid of the others.

AH ....the BRUSHED FINISH.... yes indeed that would take it right off.  The suggestion about contacting the manufacturer is an excellent one as well as searching the internet for fixes.  Brushed finishes can be a pain because of this....
