Steak & Ale was a huge favorite here too. I agree, that salad bar was excellent. Everything was fresh and ice cold.
This is the second thing I've read about steak in the last 5 minutes.
I need a steak now. LOL

I miss H.S. Fish 'n Chips. Not for the fish but for their malt vinegar. I have never forgotten it. The store malt vinegars are not even close. I miss Farrell's ice cream restaurant too. The Apple Pie Dowdy was just so good !
Edited for typos...

Now that I think of it, it was H. SALT Fish 'n Chips. The chips (fries) used to be wrapped in newspaper. Talk about good.

Let me add to the mix, Valle's Steak House. They were a chain in the Northeast and in New England. Excellent food. I don't remember why they folded.

MaryBailey: Chili's is still going strong, but Chi-Chi's is long gone everywhere. Apparently they sickened dozens or possibly even killed a couple of folks a few years back by serving veggies that had been exposed to water contaminated with human waste. Safe to say nobody was going to eat there after that.

MaryBailey: Chili's is still going strong, but Chi-Chi's is long gone in the US. Apparently they sickened hundreds and killed several folks a few years back by serving veggies that had been exposed to water contaminated with human waste. That caused the largest outbreak of hepatitis A in US history. Safe to say nobody was going to eat there after that.
If you want to eat at ChiChi's you'll have to go to Belgium, Luxembourg, The United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, China (figures) or Kuwait.

On 1/13/2014 soonersis said:Steak and Ale was the first steak house restaurant I remember going to in a big city. There was also a really good restaurant in Oklahoma City that served crepes but I cannot remember the name of it. Think it was part of a chain, but is no longer open. Anyone remember what this is?
Editing this as I think I just remembered it. Believe it was The Magic Pan. Anybody remember this?
Must have been a chain--I think they had them in Dallas and maybe Tulsa too? It was good! I also remember Raffles and Christophers (?) and oh my goodness the place out in the woods on the north side of town--served quail and fried things! SLEEPY HOLLOW! Yeah that was it! Along with Pappa Dio's (was that the one on I-35?).

I really liked Steak and Ale too. Food was always good there. Bennigans was next door to Steak and Ale and gone also. We used to have a Darryls but that is gone now but I have seen them when we were out of town and ate there.

I don't really miss the restaurants cited in the article. We generally prefer to eat at local establishments rather than chains (although of course we do eat at chain restaurants from time to time). However, I do miss Steak and Ale. DH and I enjoyed eating there. I always had the "Kensington Cut" steak, a tender sirloin cut flavored with a wonderful, distinctive marinade, and we loved their big salad bar. I feel sad every time I pass one of their shuttered restaurants in metro Atlanta. Some still have the old S&A signs up.
I wish someone would revive Steak and Ale!
