Now that I think about it, I do miss the Howard Johnson's of my youth. It was a great place to go in the sixties for a late night burger snack after the movies. I also would drive down to the Howard Johnson's in Asbury Park (from central Jersey) even during the winter months, with my girlfriend. We would look at the ocean, have some chocolate chip ice cream there, then drive all the way back home again. I also remember a frosty shake they had there for a while called a HoJo, it was orange with lime sherbet or lime with orange sherbet, can't recall which, but it was really refreshing in the summer.

More recent, would be missing Bennigan's. It wasn't gourmet food, but you could always count on finding something enjoyable there for a reasonable price. It was close to my workplace, so often it was a place we would go to celebrate a birthday lunch or a holiday party.

Ho Jo's made Freezes - Orange sherbet and sprite. I think some Ho Jo's also offered Lemon or Lime sherbet as well.

My favorite places to eat aren't chains. They are independently owned, one of a kind.

The only one on that list that's in this area is Fazoli's - the food is so-so; I wouldn't miss it if it were gone.

Some of the places I do miss are Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips, The Magic Pan (there was one near my office in NYC), and Child's restaurants (NYC).

The best burgers EVER were from a placed called The Hamburger Train in NYC; it was a hole-in-the-wall, but always packed - you'd see news anchors (from NBC across the street) and company presidents sitting at the counter next to typists and secretaries - it was loved by everyone; I can't believe it's gone - it was immensely popular.

Cats3000 - you know, that building will always be "The Pan Am Building" to me - I don't care what they call it now! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1} Are Hot Shoppes gone? I stopped at one only a couple of times, but can't remember them well, if they were good or bad - in fact, I only remember them at all because one of my cook books is from there.

There's a place in Chattanooga that has a restaurant in a railroad car - The Choo-Choo, I think.

Anyone a fan of Ted's Montana Grill?

We still have an Arthur Treacher's.

So many memories at places you mentioned... especially during my dating years. What about Fudruckers restaurant? Did that close? I remember standing room only there. Washington Street Station -- the Spaghetti Factory? Sam Wilson's Meat Market?

For chain type restaurants, I liked Bennigans too and I like Ruby Tuesday. They have good burgers, decent salmon and a reasonably good salad bar. As these type of places go there are others I'd miss far less, TGI Fridays, Chile's and Appleby's to name a few... I'll actually eat at Ruby's, but not the others.

DH and I used to eat at a place called Tumbleweed and loved it. Don't know how many there were but we have sure missed it.

I remember The Magic Pan for crepes, and how about Pewter Pot and Mug N Muffin for a huge pot of coffee or tea on left on your table and yummy muffins? Or Brigham's for ice-cream.

Yum! That brings me back to college- Boston University in the late 1970's!!!
