Just heard today that Smithfield Foods, producers of hams, etc. has agreed to be bought by Shuanghui International, a Chinese food company for almost $5 BILLION. This is not only the biggest takeover of an American company by a Chinese firm, but the first of a major U.S. consumer brand.
News articles are asking the question how will this affect the brand seeing as how China will now control a major U.S. food producer? How do you all feel about it? Personally, I don't buy much if any Smithfield products but this may just herald the beginning of other of our food suppliers being owned by China. That kind of money is hard to resist.
