I noticed Great American Seafood Imports shrimp skewers on Gourmet Holiday. New vendor? When I looked at the nutritional info it says shrimp and SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE and salt.
Then I looked at other shrimp product vendors on QVC. Same with shrimp from Anderson's Seafood. And Egg Harbor.
So would/do you eat shrimp that has SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE?

What is it?

@EatWell If you're trying to create hysteria about it, at least look it up and see what it is. Perhaps a preservative?

@EatWell If I were advising anyone about shrimp, I would suggest wild caught gulf shrimp. Don't buy shrimp from anywhere else in the world. Know your source and understand how it is packaged and preserved.

@EatWell Never mind, I'll do it for you.
STPP is a preservative for seafood, meats, poultry, and animal feeds. It is common in food production as E number E451. In foods, STPP is used as an emulsifier and to retain moisture. ... The United States Food and Drug Administration lists STPP as "generally recognized as safe.
Sounds as though you be probably eaten it before and survived.

It's used to retain moisture in fish and seafoods. Anyone with kidney disease should avoid it, but then I doubt they'd be ordering much from QVC anyway.
California lists it - in large quantities - as a pesticide and air contaminant.
I don't think there's any reason for hysteria. (Or ALL CAPS.)

Thank you!
I just looked it up. Found out it is used in wet scallops to plump them up. Unlike dry scallops that is just scallops.
First time I heard it is used in shrimp as a preservative. Must also add bulk/wight to the product.
Guess it’s ok and harmless like MSG.
Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) is a chemical that has many uses in industry, ranging from an ingredient in cleaning products to a food preservative. Also known by alternate names like pentasodium salt or triphosphoric acid, the substance falls into the classification Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS), which means that past use of the chemical has presented no risk to health. It can also be found in some paints and ceramic products, among other uses.

Says they are farm raised from Asia. I would not touch them with a 10 foot pole..........
The Sodium Tripolyphosphate would be the least of my worries.......
