Campion - your dog eats a whole can of pumpkin at a time? Wow, that seems like a huge amount. I give Ru one spoonful in his breakfast, after I poor in the Glucosamine/etc capsules on the dry food, then a couple splashes of hot water and I mix it all up.
One 15oz can lasts between one and two weeks for us.

I give her a half a can, and her compatriot gets a half, but she'd eat a whole one if I'd let her. She's a big girl (60 pounds.) Her brother is even bigger and lives on a farm. He's a horse of a dog--90 lbs, large for a poodle.
Even the late cat would come over for a mouthful. They all love it.

I was just at the grocery store and they had several heads of cauliflower and they were only $2.29 a head. I've heard about the shortage and high prices too, but they are always available at a reasonable price at the Kroger near me. They had the purple and green ones too (forget what they are called).

Ah, I see. Yeah, they LOVE that pumpkin! Ru weighed in at 97lbs last time he was at the doc. Moderately large boy for a Golden I guess. I figured I'd just go with it each morning, since he has been known to have a sensitive stomach so, hopefully, the spoonful q day is enough. His potties do look 100% better so I guess it's working out.
I just put the pumpkin puree into a Lock & Lock container, stored in the refrigerator, so it stores well for the period of time it takes to use it up. I once decided to use the 29oz cans, since they are cheaper by the oz but it just lasts too long. Tried putting half of one in the freezer, in a nother L&L, but it made it too watery. So I just stock up each Fall and it works well.
It's nice that something so basic is so good for them! ![]()

@Brooklynny wrote:There is, indeed, a shortage of pumpkin. I remember seeing a report on the news around October that the pumpkin crop in Illinois, which produces about 90% of the pumpkin supply in the U.S, was wiped out by last summer's heavy rains. Because the supply ran out, you probably won't find any pumpkin anywhere until the next harvest this coming fall.
I live in TN and there were pumpkins galore last fall. I hate to use canned pumpkin so I get my pumpkins from a local farmer at a very reasonable price and then cook them, puree, and freeze so I have pumpkin year round. Here is some right before putting it in the freezer last fall - love the color especially compared to canned!

havent really looked for canned pumpkin or canned pumpkin pie filling this time of the year. i do recall that last autumn they said there would be a shortage, but the stores that i shop in had stacks and stacks of displays so i never noticed any "shortage."
i cant say i have stopped seeing cauliflower either. i know people have been complaining about the price, but i have seen them at about $2-$3 a head here.....sometimes $1 a head if it is in the marked down section of older vegetables.

Yeah, my observation has been that the pumpkin products start coming in during early Fall. That's when to snag all you'll need.

I usually buy 25-30 cans and I have enough for the puppy's pumpkin in his breakfast (just a spoonful each day), the birdie bread I make for the bird, and any baking I may do for the humans, for the whole year.
@chickenbutt that's a great tip to buy a quantity at a time, especially when it's on sale for holiday baking.
I'll have to figure out what I need for 6 to 12 months.

What I did was just to diary how long one can of pumpkin lasted for Ru (8-12 days per 15oz can), then added what I'd need for birdie bread for the year. My recipe makes a 15x10" pan, which I cut into squares and vac-seal in half-dozens and keep frozen because one batch lasts almost a year for a less-than-1# birdie and that w/b the only way to store it properly. That's 1-29oz can or 2-15oz cans. So I add in the pumpkin pies (another 2 cans) for Thanksgiving, and the occasional pumpkin bread or bundt cake.
That will give me a pretty good idea of how much lasts a year, plus I go over a little bit to make sure - because that's how I am. ![]()
I think I got just over 30 cans this year. I buy the Libby's brand. It always has a really good 'use by' date that gives at least 2 years. I find the best price at Walmart, unless my grocery store (which isn't known for low prices) has it on ad. Then it's about the same and I don't have to make two trips.
(yeah, I think too much!)

Yes, Walmart is lowest price and their own brand of pumpkin is like Libby's (I assume it's just Libby private label.) I hate to shop there (depressing, slow and they ruined a friend's business when he was selling to them. I haven't walked in a Walmart since they did what they did. )

I can pumpkin when we grow it for pies and a Pumpkin Dump Cake that I make. It is canned in chunks and I puree it when I need to use it. Hubby likes making pumpkin pie but I am not a big fan. I like the filling just not the crust.
