I think it's pure luck. I have an Amana with a bottom freezer. It's almost nine years old and hasn't had any issues. My neighbor had the same one and hers died years ago. She replaced it with the same model and she hasn't had any issues.

I am seriously looking at a Whirlpool 36" wide 4 door.  Does anyone have experience with one?  As the sale ends within a week, I'd be very appreciative of any input.  Thanks in advance.

My personal decision is to buy moderately priced refrigerators and then not feel bad if they only last a few years. I go for the basic, no frills model, and only buy GE and Whirlpool.

NEVER again would I buy any SAMSUNG product. I had my 2nd one delivered (1st one a dud) french door style this March, 2015 -- the repairman has been here 3x's and no answers. And their CS is even worse!!! I should have returned it when I could and gotten a Frigidaire or something else (not GE I see they have poor reviews)!

I have a Figidaire side by side and an LG with bottom freezer- love them both, but would never buy another side by side- ice maker and drink dispenser take up what precious little room is in a side by side freezer...If you do, you need a spare refrigerator...which, luckily,  I have 

knock wood, Both have been reliable and both are in the 10 year old range...

Same problem you have described with Samsung.  We bought my daughter the french door w/ice maker.  Fridge makes loud noise and freezes up.  Look online - there is a class action suit about this.  I wouldn't recommend Samsung.
