I just tasted red velvet cake today for the first time. Never had it before in my life. It had cream cheese icing. I was expecting it to be fantastic for all that I've heard about it recently, but it just left me thinking, "Huh? Is that it?" It didn't taste like much of anything, just a bland sweetness with more sweet icing. I was not terribly impressed. It was a cake someone had purchased. Looked like maybe from a supermarket bakery.
Can someone please describe the flavor of red velvet cake? Are my taste buds unsophisticated? Maybe if you grew up with it, you acquire a taste for it, but it was a big dud for me. Any comments?
