When my mother passed away a couple of years ago, I made sure to grab her recipe boxes. I have been craving some really good banana cake and remember that my great aunt was the best baker in the world, so I sorted through the recipes and I found hers!
But, just seeing the recipes hand-written by my mom, my grandmothers and even my own printing brought back such lovely memories. I will be passing this treasure box to my niece at some point and hope that she will cherish them, as well. They won't mean as much to her since she never had the food that goes with the recipes, but I am hoping she can make some new memories with her young family.
I did have to laugh at how horribly unhealthy these are, and I can't wait to make some!
I hope everyone has a delicious and delightful holiday!

Just the other night I was going through an old paperback of cookie recipes from 1962 or maybe earlier (I think I was given this booklet in 8th grade). Inside were stuffed many clipped recipes and handwritten ones by my mom. I don't think she made all these, but some were familiar, and yes, it was such a trip down memory lane to see her handwriting.
She's been gone for 12 years now, but it seems like yesterday that we were making Christmas cookies together.

My grandma made the best pie crust using lard. Healthy ? No, but so flaky and delicious !

I didn't get anything after my mother passed 17 years ago. And I often wish I had her Rumford cookbook for the seafoam icing recipe alone. There were two of those books, one my mom's and one my grandmother's, and I got neither. I wish I could see my mom's handwritten recipes, and often have felt that way.
So I made books out of journals for my children, one for each kid. Many of the recipes I hand wrote, but others are family favorites from my MIL, an awsome cook and old ones I copied from my mom's books years ago, I have a few written by my MIL that I copied and pasted in for them, so they have her handwriting too. My husband didn't get any of her cookbooks or recipes either.
These really are treasures, I agree.

I kept some of her WWII recipes - not that I'll ever make them. One thing I noticed is that the one room school teachers must have demanded precise penmanship because all the ladies who grew up in the 30's and 40's write their cursive letters exactly the same.

I make my pie crust with lard since that's what my mother taught me, and because it's so good.
I have a treasured recipe in my grandmother's handwriting for pralines. She was born in the late 1800's and was raising her daughter, my mother, during the "big depression." Her recipe lists quantities of ingredients until the last item. That reads "Pecans. Let your conscience be your guide."

I have a couple of recipe cards from my mom....her handwriting brings back such nice memories. I am not sure how I ended up with the cards, but there is one recipe I don't have and cannot seem to locate it.
There are several sites on Etsy that will take your handwrtten recipe card and put it on a tray, plate, etc...makes a nice sentimental gift.

My mother was not a from scratch baker and never used a recipe to cook anything as far as I know. My Mil was an excellent cook and would not give you a recipe for anything. When my MIL died the first thing I looked for was her recipe box. MIL made the best sticky buns and coconut cream pie and now the recipes are mine, all mine.LOL

I have a few of my Grandmother 's recipes. They all have similar measurements; a handful of this, a little that. My aunts tried to replicate actual recipes by trial and error. We used taste, consistency, and guesswork to figure them out. Just the fact that we have those yellowed, stained papers is the treasure.

I love that idea! My Mom’s handwriting was so pretty. Mine is terrible. Don’t know why but my penmanship has always been a mess no matter how I try 🥴.
