I bought one about a year ago because I thought it was pretty. I use it to hold scraps for our pig and chickens. I like the fact that the bottom is non-skid. Yeah it was expensive but imo no more of a silly purchase then spending 40-50 bucks for make up or skin cream.

I also think this bowl should not be called a garbage bowl (misleading). When they first came out, I thought how ridicules to spend money on a bowl to put scraps in. Then my SIL got one and was in love with it for mixing in it on granite counter tops, no slippage with rubber bottom. She uses for everything except microwave.
I got it and just love this bowl! The red is very pretty and I ended up getting my daughter a purple one. I also love the feel of this bowl and rubber bottom.

They are nice-looking RR bowls, though. Can use to store/display fruit. I wouldn't use it as a scrap bowl. Plenty of dollar store bowls to use as garbage/scrap bowls. I believe I saw the speckled RR bowls at Ross a month or so ago.

I have seen those bowls in stores at least since the late 60's - even dollar stores! I had one in the early 70's.

There must be a patent (or something similar) on that bowl, as I haven't seen other brands of 'speckled' bowls.

I think that RR started selling them because people saw her's on the show and wanted one like it. I don't think that 16.99 for a bowl that someone really likes is unreasonable, and of course, people can use just any old bowl for that purpose.
I have one left from my original Texas Ware set of 3.

I cannot believe that people would buy and bowl just because it's Rachel's...I have bowls which I do not use for garbage, I use the plastic bags from the grocery store and when done I throw it out and that's one less thing to wash...isn't this a novel idea....I guess there's a sucker born every day who has too much money and doesn't know how to use it wisely

Didn't buy mine because it was RR's, I bought it because I liked the look of it and the non-slip bottom is great for right by the sink. No slippage and no damage to my granite. Can't get that from a dollar store purchase, but to each his own. Doesn't smell either as one poster commented. I don't let it sit there and fester for days on end, it goes out every couple of days. I also don't put meat scraps in mine, just coffee grounds, veggie scraps and egg shells. Thought the shells might smell, but they don't.
