Question About Using Coconut Oil

I will be making a recipe soon that calls for coconut oil but have never used it.  The recipe doesn't specify, but a local store has it on sale in two varieties: Natural Refined and Organic Unrefined.

Which one should I buy?  Does it matter one way or the other?

Thanks.

Truthfully, I doubt there's any such thing as an organic coconut tree.

Re: Question About Using Coconut Oil

I use organic, extra virgin, cold pressed, unrefined--Viva naturals is the brand. It is gluten free, kosher, non gmo, cert organic as well as sustainable harvested. Wow---lots there, right. Google it to find out more.

Re: Question About Using Coconut Oil

refined is flavorless, I buy unrefined and I substitute it for other oils and occasionally butter in many baking recipes. Not all though.

Re: Question About Using Coconut Oil

I do not cook with it a lot but have . I use Simply Nature brand that I buy at Aldis (organic , unrefined ,cold pressed, virgin oil ) reasonably priced.Trader Joes makes a good one also.

One that is processed and not very tasty (IMO) is Lou Ann's sold at many grocery stores .

There are varied school of thoughts on the health benefits from it will kill you (Smiley Happy ) to make you very healthy.

To use in homemade cosmetic items I find it wonderful.

Re: Question About Using Coconut Oil

Thanks, everyone, your feedback has been very helpful.  I think I will go with the organic unrefined.  I'm kind of late getting into this coconut oil craze, and had no idea what to buy.

Re: Question About Using Coconut Oil

I use (and love) both!  I use the unrefined (no taste) when I'm baking, frying, or sauteing something I don't want to compete with the flavors...but I use the refined version when I want just a hint of coconut flavor...like some vegetables or chicken.  I also put a tiny bit in my morning coffee.  Love the stuff!

And of course either version is good for skin/hair too. Enjoy!
