Produce & Fruit Flies

[ Edited ]

We've never really had trouble with fruit flies before but they were obviously on something we brought home from the market, and we are having a heck of a time getting rid of them.

I put a picnic mesh contraption over the fruit bowl and DH made something he found as an internet suggestion: a clean jar with apple cider in it and a paper cone leading down into the apple cider.  True, the latter invention helped, but those little things were multiplying fast.

I threw out everything in the fruit bowl and the potatoes and onions.

Our supermarket no longer carries fruit wash.

What are people using on their produce?

How do others get rid of fruit flies?

ps  I wonder if their proliferation is due to the drought and continual hot weather we've had?

I had an issue with them in the spring.  It was terriable.  I did the apple cider with the funnel and then I also read apple cider in a small glass and put siran wrap with a rubber band on top of the glass and poke a few holes with a toothpick.  It took awhile but I finally got rid of them.  They were even  in my bathroom!

Never had any problems w/fruit flies.

When I return home from the store, I immediatly wash all fruits & vegatables & refrigerate them.

I NEVER leave fruit laying around the house/kitchen/dinner table/countertops.

Wow, what's up with this invasion of the fruit flies?  Smiley Surprised

Thanks for your reply, and I am glad to hear your apple cider vinegar invention worked, DH is so proud of his, LOL.

I was so desperate I threw everything out.  Just have blueberries and strawberries in the frig.  Oh, and I did get two new heads of garlic and now have them stored in a stoneware crock with a top.

I went so far as to get canned pear halves so we could have something.   Canned corn, also, and a TJoes jar of artichoke hearts.  Almost nothing fresh for us until they are gone, gone, gone.

Mz iMac,

What are you washing with?  Dish soap and water?  I know some people use a little bleach.

What do you do with your tomatoes and bananas?  We are not supposed to refrigerate them.
