I live in Western PA and always knew them to be Polish and pronounced poonchki. THey are so good, but I never had a filled one. Just plain.  Almost all the Catholic churches in the area sell them on Fat Tuesday, but you need to order in advance.  Wish I had one now.  It's been a long time since I have had one.

@mildoo

I stopped in Safeway this morning...but the bakery section was almost empty.   So,  I looked for a cake slice...but the few they had were dated Feb 27.     I guess I'm outta luck(!!)    di

Oh my paczki !!!  LOVE THEM. I am Eastern European (polish, Lithuanian, Slovakia, Ukrainian) and my grandmoms (babchi) used to make them at home - prune or strawberry or custard filled. That little row house kitchen smelled like heaven.  Nothing better. My favorite were the custard. When they got too old to fool with it, we got them at Milkulski's Bakery in Canton (Baltimore City).  They were immigrants and brought those old world recipes with them 💜💙.

I live in an area where ethnic specialities stop at potato salad, fried chicken and greens. Sadly, no one knows what a paczki is 😫

@mildoo   I got a 4 pack at Giant Eagle.  Good, but nothing like Oakmonts or other specialty bakeries.  We got Apple/black raspberry.  I'm in W PA too.   I also heard today that many cities don't have the variety of fish fry's we have either during Lent.

A nice treat on Fat Tuesday. I didn't venture out for any this year.

I'm asking this most sincerely - since we have king cakes, not Paczkis.  How are they different from jelly donuts?

@shoesnbags   I didn't get mine from a specialty bakery, my grocery store paczki's seems like just a jelly donut.  I'm a little disappointed.

We used to have customers in LA that sent us delicious king cakes.
