So far things are breaking left and right in the house. First it was the bedroom TV, then we needed the Mitsubishi mini split, now tonight the over the stove microwave. What type do you have? Make/Model? We've had to replace this appliance twice, I'm tempted to put a shelf in and just put a compact unit there but DH says no. . .do you love yours? I really don't use it for much other than reheating and defrosting.

Re: Over the Range Microwave

Mine is Kitchenaid and I've been happy with it it.  I have had to reboot it a few times.  Unplug it, plug it back in, and it fixes it.

Have you tried that?

Re: Over the Range Microwave

I have a Whirlpool over the stove microwave that I use daily.  I've had it since early 2009,  and never had any trouble with it.

@We rescue cats    I have a whirlpool and I love it.  It is pretty good size but I wanted the same size as what I had.  I had bought it at Home Depot and had good service.

Re: Over the Range Microwave

@september When I closed the door on it tonight it sounded like a piece broke, and now the door doesn't latch so it won't work at all. But thanks for the suggestion! It's a Samsung and I have never liked it so I can't say I am terribly upset that it needs replaced...other than paying for a new one.

I have had an over the stove LG microwave for at least ten years. I use it multiple times every day and, other than a squeaky door, it continues to do a great job with no problems. It was the Cosumers Report recommendation at the time that I bought it.

Re: Over the Range Microwave

@We rescue cats  Please don't replace your microwave with another Samsung. All of our large appliances are Samsung. We are slowly replacing them as they die.  Samsung makes great televisions, appliances not so much.

They are very expensive to replace parts, if you can even get the parts. My husband can fix anything, so if something goes wrong he tries to get the parts and fix it himself. The rubber gasket on the door of our Samsung fridge was coming off and he went to replace them, it was $300 for the gaskets. We're just going to get a new fridge. You can't use generic parts that are supposed to fit certain manufacturers. They don't fit Samsungs!

Re: Over the Range Microwave

We've always had GE microwaves in all of the places we've lived and have never had a problem with them.  The microwave is the appliance we use most for cooking so it is used several times a day without incident.
