This happened on a Kenmore glass top stove, approx. 12 years old.

While baking homemade granola, oven set 275 degrees, within 40 minutes (baking time 50-60 min) my oven beeped. Confused, because no timer was set. Then smoke drifted into the living room where I sat. Ran into the kitchen and smoke was coming from the oven and the display read ERROR (I think). Tried to turn off the oven, but remained red hot. Removed the still smoking, charred granola outside and turned off the oven by disconnecting the oven circuit breaker. While all this was happening, the smoke detector had kick in with its ear piercing sound. Disabled the smoke detector after getting a ladder. After the oven cooled, thought I rechecked the oven, turned on the circuit breaker, oven went red hot again and the display reading was dark. This oven is done, will never trust it again, even if repaired.

Just sharing so others will be aware of this oven hazard, so many of you share things that have helped me.

Glad the only thing that burned was my granola and I was not walking the dog or such.

For Christmas getting a new stove, coil top, always hated the glass top.

Sounds like the the temperature control was sticking. My glass top stove had a burner that done that, and my husband replaced the burner. It was the the temperature control. Luckily he is one that can repair anything...saves us a fortune!Smile

05gage25 Thought of calling for a repair person to check out the oven, husband strengths are not mechanical. He decided it would be better to purchase a new stove. Which is great for me, but you are right, stoves are expensive. So this Christmas gift will be a after Christmas purchase.

Get rid of it. That happened to me once with a regular electric stove. I called repair and was told the self clean had switched itself on. They told me the company would try to get me to repair the oven but flat out said DO NOT LET THEM TALK YOU INTO IT. Get a new stove.

Pink. Never thought to check around the walls. Your right, the oven was so hot it could have caused a smoldering fire in the walls. Just so grateful everything is ok. Still getting a new stove, but will never leave the oven unattended.
