Nascar, on the Rangemate topic, you can even cook pasta in it-a real boon or college kids. Over on Recipe Swap, there's a topic devoted to Rangemate. I would buy the one with the muffin and steamer inserts. Jiffy and Martha White mixes are cheap and taste great when you miss mom!
.....and after she has gained her "freshman ten" from eating all of this great food, you can buy her a copy of "The Dorm Room Diet" by Daphne Oz. It's a great book--especially for young women. Insane diets and questionable weight loss gimmicks run rampant.

Don't forget dishsoap and towels if she is taking anything other than styrofoam bowls and plates. The dorms here have a shared bathroom, no kitchen sink to wash dishes.

Personally, I'd hesitate to buy accessories for a dorm room without knowing how much space there is, what she needs and wants, and exactly what her tastes and color scheme dictate. If she lives in the same town with you, how about taking her out to lunch and stopping by somewhere like Bed, Bath and Beyond or Target and letting her pick out an item or two as a gift from Grandma? If that's not possible, I think an "off to college" card with cash or a gift card inside is probably the best way to go. That way she can buy something after she moves into the dorm and determines what she really needs to complete her room

When I went away to school my Mom sent me with an electric tea kettle - i could also make cup of soup in it too, and instant coffee. She also would send me food care packages pretty often as well. food is the biggest issue with dorm living - the cafeteria food is not generally very good plus when you are studying it is good to have good stuff like peanut butter crackers or a cookie to munch on.

Here is another idea-

Good for reading, doing computer work, or writing.
I also like these a lot, from Tervis.

Nice tips! I love the one re: the shoe bag/holder with all of the favorite snacks! Might use that one for myself!

make her room 'fun' and or homey??
Just a thought.....
Send her a check or cash. What you and/or us may think is fun & homey may not be so for an 18 yr old. Let her make her own choices.
It's what I did when I sent my 17 yr old off to college.

What about a laundry basket filled with cleaning detergent and paper goods? Then right on top of the basket you can include a picture of you.

When my daughter went away to college she wanted a toaster oven, good for toasting bagels and frozen pizza, a single cup Keurig and lifts for the bed frame so she could store stuff under her bed. Got them at BBB. She also wanted a cork board to hang some of her pictures. As someone else said a good mattress pad is a must.
