Need help with mini muffin pan

I used my mini muffin pan for the first time and I guess I just don't know how to use this pan. I prepared a cake mix as usual and filled the cups half full. I made sure the pan was clean. I baked them for 10 minutes and they looked as they should look. With great anticipation I turned in upside down to release the cupcakes. Nothing happened. I took a fork and gently tried to release them and I was able to get half of them out that way without breaking them. So I still had batter left and this time I sprayed the pan with Pam. I had exactly the same result. So please someone tell me how to use this pan or did I waste my money.
