I live in North Jersey and my local Penzeys store is in NY State, about 45 minutes away from me. I don't get there too often, but when I'm there I love browsing around and I even have a favorite salesperson. She is so sweet and she knows my mom and me (we usually go together). I also bring my grandma's shopping list to do her shopping and the saleswoman asks about my grandma when she sees me. They have the best customer service and have always been so accomodating. It was such a pleasant shopping experience. For such a little store I could spend an hour or two in there looking around.
I went recently to make up a gift box, pick up a couple things and just browse around. I walked up to the store and it was no longer there, apparently since mid-May. I'm so sad. I will miss shopping in the store and sniffing around and I will miss seeing my favorite salesperson.
I feel like Penzeys is closing a lot of stores lately. There was a store in NJ and it closed a while back. Anyone have theories about this? Are they not doing well financially? Are the store rents too high? Would they rather have more of an online only presence?
I've noticed I spend more money when shopping in the store. Browsing around inspires me to try some new things I might not otherwise try. That happened during my last visit with Chicago Steak Seasoning.

I'm out West, so there is not a store anywhere near me but I wonder if maybe they make better money on the website than with the stores. Or maybe they opened too many stores to support the areas (?). Hard telling, but I imagine it's something about making, or not making, money to support costs and provide adequate profits.
The good thing is that the website is really handled super well and you can get great customer service if you contact anybody through the website. ![]()

I'm so sorry to hear that. I was very excited and surprised when our Penzey store opened a few years ago and I always tell people about it to try and drum up business. I love Penzey's and always bought my spices there online before the store opened.

Is that the one in Palisades Center? It was not in the most frequented area either
Stores come and go quickly there, I think sometimes they could be test stores (just MO)

I'm In CO. The state had 4 or 5 stores at one point, but 2 recently closed, including one by me. I read in our local paper at the time that Penzeys was closing many stores nationwide. The company refused comment about why. Interesting.

@jackthebear Yes, in Palisades. The location was great for me, in terms of parking.
It opened 5 years ago.

I work in Seattle and was excited when a Penzey's store opened nearby in a tourist area. It didn't seem to last very long before it was closed. I had wondered why they closed it so quickly and thought it must be for financial reasons. They didn't do a very good job of publicizing its presence and most people I know hadn't heard of it. It seems like the missed out on building enough of a customer base in the Seattle area. I found out about them through a post here and have been buying online.

I live in NJ too. I noticed that the Summit location is also closed. No great loss as I rarely went there. Parking was difficult at best.
