My girl friend has a recipe that calls for maple flavoring, she is having trouble find it...finally she found McCormicks brand at a small grocery store but it was very light in color and not as thick as she recalls it used to be.....
In our area the only brands are McCormick and Watkins.....anyone have good luck with another brand? thanks

I just looked at the bottle of McCormicks that's in my cabinet. It is thin, but it works just fine.

does maple flavoring mean maple extract or maple syrup?
i know that mccormick makes maple extract and maple syrup can also be found in our grocery stores (although we brought a lot of it back with us from canada this summer.)
would probably have to see the recipe to determine.

@sunshine45...I meant extract....she made a candy recipe and used maple extract, as she always does, but there is very little flavor of maple and she even added an extra amount because the extract was so thin and light in color. I thought maybe there was another brand in the marketplace other than the two I mentioned ( and can get locally).

There really is a range in the quality of extracts, I'd read some reviews on different brands on Amazon to get an idea. I don't even bother with flavorings any more. I once got this rum flavoring that was so bad it smelled like something you'd mistake for a pirates urinal cake.

Knowing myself, I'd use maple syrup. Although, just thinking that perhaps flavorings lose their flavor once opened? I recall using maple extract many years ago, and it was a true maple flavor. Maybe they changed their formula? Maybe email or call the company, 'see what they say'.

p.s. Could be a 'bad batch'. I'd call the company. 'Customers count'. Maybe other customers have complained, too. It's worth a try.

The only one I can find locally is Watkins. I actually just use grade A dark maple syrup instead most of the time, although I have used Watkins also.

I've never used it for candy, but I can see why she's use it in that capacity instead of maple syrup.

I have never used or even thought of maple extract until reading the post, but I think it will definitely be in my future.
If I was purchasing it, I would buy from Olivenation, Spice House, King Arthur, or Savory Spice. I have bought from all and have visited Savory Spice. I would recommend them all over McCormick's.
