Re: Many Seniors live alone, what are some snacks for 1 ??

Elderly people tend to avoid things that will get stuck in their teeth or dentures, like popcorn. Also, anything weird and trendy.

My grandmother always liked fruit. Yogurt, too.

I'm going to make a list of all the ideas and give it to her. She does a program at the Senior Center and wanted some other foods other than fruits and nuts.

KEEP THE IDEAS COMING!!!!{#emotions_dlg.thumbup}{#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

I'm getting so many ideas from you all! Barbara, thanks for posing the question.

Does peanut butter on a spoon count as a nut? That's my favorite snack. It can be modified for other nut or cookie butters.

Granola or protein bars

Cheese Balls

lock&lock containers are invaluable for anyone living alone; you can break down larger packages into smaller, snack-size portions and keep them fresh much longer and save a lot of money over individually-wrapped snacks. If your friend doesn't have any, it would be nice to order her a set of the 1-cup bowls.

Funny.........aren't most snacks "snacks for one"? Usually, snacking is an individual sport around here.........an individual feels hungry between meals and grabs a handful of nuts, fruit, some popcorn, or cheese and crackers to tide them over. I guess the exception is when I fix a snack for a group watching a sports event on TV or something, but that doesn't happen very often. Just about anything can be a "snack for one".

Funny, the elderly people I see snacking aren't eating healthy. They eat donuts, cookies, small cakes, ice cream, cheese, soft candy, pie, soft fruits, peanut butter---all things they can easily chew. They don't seem to be interested in too many nutritious snacks at their age.

I also find this to be true. My mom is such a terrible eater at 89 years old. She lost lots of weight the last couple of years. I try to keep pudding cups in her fridge, ice cream sandwiches and pop-top cans of pears and peaches. Of course I can think of more healthful things, but she's not diabetic and I need her to consume some calories.

One of my favorite snacks is a small size can of microwavable Hormel chili and beans (not the regular size). Microwave as directed. Pour over a handful of Fritos. Top with sour cream. The fritos can be broken into smaller pieces.

The Fritos soften and the sour cream has calcium added to the protein in the chili. (Not everybody considers soy beans a snack -- especially the older crowd.)

Easy to make. Can substitute as a meal for those with little appetite.

At 89, I'd say your mom should enjoy eating whatever she likes!

That's her opinion, too. She has osteoporosis, though it's not very severe. She gets Prolia shots, yet she drinks no milk whatsoever. I try to get her snacks with calcium, like pudding and ice-cream. I'm sure a nutritionist could tell me why this thinking is misguided, but it's the best I can do right now. She has become as picky as a 5 year old when it comes to eating.
