I keep some cheap sandwich bags that I put any "garbage" in before it goes in the can!  No odors!

@branny  Like you, I always freeze food scraps and bones, until

                 trash day.

If you can, set your trash can in the sun for a while!

we are required by the refuse company to dispose of all scraps and food in yard waste bin now.  I haven't seen maggots in trash since early 1980's. I don't know if it is the food we eat, or what but I haven't seen maggots here in years.  I. Was traumatized by those gross things one time in 70's.  I was in garage, and from under the door leading to side yard was a mass of maggots 2 feet wide solid, moving fast the length was a few feet.  Idk where they came from. But it was like a 2X3 ft solid patch.  Omg, I about passed out, husband and neighbor lay Ed siege on those suckers for about 30 minutes.  Came from crack in cement.

I didn't know there was a difference between trash and garbage.

I prefer using the garbage bags that you tie. I tie the two opposite ends, so that's two ties that criss-cross each other. Then I take the first two flaps for a third tie. The pull string ones always leave a little hole in the center.

@drizzellla   I purchased the Terro trash can fly stickers.  I have a large trash can outside and stick 2 on the inside of the lid.  These sticks are fantastic I haven't had any flys or maggot problems.

There are people who intentionally raise maggots. They're good fish and chicken food. Some reptiles also love them. A cheap, self-supplying food for fish, reptiles, and chickens. If you Google "raising maggots for fish food" you'll find all kinds of articles and videos on how to do it. It's pretty easy stuff. Put your garbage where flies can find it, and in no time you have lots of live food for your critters.
