When I was a kid, the way things were done was that trash went out front and garbage (food scraps) went in a garbage can in the back of your house (either a driveway or an alley, depending on where you lived).  Trashmen would pick up trash; garbage trucks would come down the driveway and get your garbage.

Whenever my mom would have me add garbage to the bucket out back, there were always maggots in it!   We didn't have a garbage disposal then and it seemed that all of the neighbors had those garbage buckets out back.  Those maggots seemed to ALWAYS be there!

I don't know when things changed in our city and garbage collections were discontinued.

When we lived in Philadelphia MANY years ago, we did the same thing. We had trash cans and garbage cans. But I never remember seeing maggots in the garbage can. But I was MUCH younger then. And Mom handled trash/garbage detail. And you did as you were told. But generally we put out the trash and it seemed Mom handled the garbage. Maybe because Mom handled the garbage, is the reason I never remember ever seeing maggots. She knew what she was doing and us kids would never be as careful.

I also have no idea when things changed. And we no longer separated trash and garbage.

@drizzellla   Yes, we were kids, so it's no wonder we have no memory of when the change occured (eliminating garbage pic-up).  We had more important things on our minds!!  lol

@drizzellla   So my husband is what I call a "trash nazi"...we have one of the big trash cans that the trash removals companies have, but we take our trash to the dump. I never throw table scraps or any food into my kitchen can. Always goes in a plastic grocery bag first.  Kitchen trash bag is tightly knotted and it goes into a commercial trash liner in the outside can.  We never throw loose trash in the outside can.  Spray with raid fly spray every time we put trash in there.  Rarely see flies - never see maggots.  Of course he cleans the can out with bleach once a week.  Yep, he's got too much time on his hands.  But better him than me cuz I ain't doin that 😆

We live in NYC and have specific bins we had to buy for different kinds of trash.  They recently started the composting again for food scraps and paper like paper towels or pizza boxes with food on them.

When my husband went to wheel the compost bin to the front of the house last night for this morning's pick up, he noticed maggots in the bin.  He left it open and next thing you know the local birds were going in and out.  Took maybe 10 minutes and almost none left.  Clearly not a practice we plan to do again but I was happy the birds were fed well.

I think I should start cleaning with bleach on a regular basis. Not sure I will do it once a week, like your husband. Since our trash is usually in a plastic bag, the can stays resonably clean.

We also have one of those big trash cans from the trash company. It is for our recycling.

But I think it is just a matter of time before we get one of those big cans for our trash. That way they have the cans picked up by a machine. They will be harder to clean since they are so big. And maybe it is time to go back to buying Raid instead of Zevo.

You know what? Before my husband left to run errands he brushed the maggots off the lid of the trash can. The trash men were expected shortly. So he wiped MANY off. They fell onto the street.

And when I went out to wipe the trash can down on the inside, not long after that, I do not remember seeing any maggots in  the street. I bet the birds ate some. We feed the birds regularly so there is always birds, rabbits, squirrels, fox and ground hog around.

Now I feel better that hopefully the birds got a different breakfast this morning. Some good came out of the mess.

If you place your trash in plastic garbage bags (which I hate for the environment but I also hate maggots and other critters) you will not get maggots.  It happened once years ago to us and I told hubby plastic bags sealed tight from now on!!
