Re: MONSODIUMGLUTIMATE IS STILL AROUND?

I don't buy anything with it.  I am very allergic to it.  It's on my warning list in medical chart.  But yes @Tinkrbl44  KNORR brands and most Hidden valley dressings have it. Some Progresso soups. .  Most all Japanese foods have it. My husband is Japanese American, his grandparents were the only ones from Japan. They ate it like crazy!  Always on table in special container. His gramma ate it on everything.  She lived to be 103, lol bless her buttons. She was 4'7, and 75 lbs soaking wet. Not a wrinkle on that woman...we all swore it was the MSG, like a preservative.  Lol

one time in 80's I was eating with family at Japanese restaurant.  I was wearing overalls. lol after miso soup I felt so bloated I went to car.  I sat and undid overalls as stomach was swelling and my hands  I couldn't button sides of overalls back up lol lol. No one came to,check. I sat out there half naked for 40 mins. Til they were done and came out to leave.  I was still swollen, saw Dr next day.  Allergic response. My tongue itched too. In those days it was hard to avoid too!!

If you do some browsing online, you'll find that several studies and a lot of scientific investigation over the past few decades have proven that all the hype about how awful MSG was didn't have much truth/reality to support it. A very small percentage of people do seem to have sensitivities to MSG, but not to any greater extent than other groups do to a host of other ingredients. Some researchers now believe that the vilification of this additive sparked from anti-Asian sentiments that increased during the 1960s; MSG has been used since the early 1900s in America and other areas around the globe.

MSG occurs naturally in foods.  Tomatoes, parm cheese and mushrooms have MSG in them for example.

It is a natural product.

Some people have had adverse problems with it.....the same as they do with nuts, milk or wheat products.

If you aren't allergic and have no bad reactions from it, it's not a problem to consume it.

It's in many foods we eat every day like canned soups, veggies and deli meats.

Shoekitty said. MSG IS produced by fermenting a mainly sugar beets, sugar cane, or corn.  It was discovered by Japanese chemist Ikeda who isolated it from seaweed broth. Yes, it is in many foods naturally

Re: MONSODIUMGLUTIMATE IS STILL AROUND?

I'm not sure if I'm allergic to MSG but I definitely have a negative reaction.  My whole body feels weird after I eat it.

Would always get a Chick-Fil-A coming back from Tampa but would feel strange when I got home.  Didn't take long to figure that one out!

I avoid it whenever possible.  Also avoid nitrates and nitrates!

All Knorr items use it!

For people who do not have allergies or sensitivities to MSG, it would not be a problem. But many do have problems with MSG and should be aware of it being listed in ingredients on packaging  of many foods, under alternative names.

Those names are: Hydrolyzed vegetable protein

                             Autolyzed yeast

                             Hydrolyzed yeast

                             Yeast extract

                              Soy extracts

                              Protein isolate

                              Hydrolyzed soy protein

Many packaged foods, including salty snack foods contain a form of MSG. Some of the flavorings added to things like Doritos, have these ingredients. They are added to things that

previously did not contain them.

My son has to read ingredients on everything. He gets debilitating migraine headaches from foods with MSG.

We have to get Chinese food that does not have MSG because I also now have high blood pressure that is adversely affected

by sodium. I am allergic to most blood pressure medications

and can only take a small dosage of one medication or I get rashes.

The last time I ate Chinese food that had MSG, I got swelling

in my face, hands and feet. It shot up my blood pressure and I spent the next day in bed. Smiley Sad  I hate having to give up those dishes that  I loved. I can get plain steamed vegetables and plain white rice, but that is kind of blah, compared to those dishes that I loved before this problem with blood pressure.
